610 Regular meeting of the City Council Austin, Tex, December 03, 1906 Council Called Hon W.P. Shelley, mayor, presiding. Roll Called Present Aldermen Crocken, Eanes, Haynes, Machen, Willcox, Moore, [Pein], Powell, Redd, Scott, Smith, Vora, Rosenberg and Wilhelm. Absent Alderman Armstrong. On motion the minutes were approved as recorded by the Clerk, without reading. Petitions &c. Petitions & memorials &c Ed Allen to remit By alderman Eanes, petition of Ed Allen, asking that fine the Council remit a fine assessed against him in the Recorders Court. On motion the petition was granted. Senate Mayfield to By Alderman Smith, petition of Senate Mayfield asking remit fine the Council to remit a fine assessed against him in the Recorders Court. On motion the petition was granted. P. Questerhoff By Alderman Redd, petition of P. Questerhoff asking Damages damages on account of overturning of buggy. New Business new business Alderman Moore offered the following resolution While it is the evident duty of every City of Austin to Austin Theological derive and strive for the location and development of Seminary Such enterprises here, as will inure to the benefit of the City, it must be recognized also that it is a duty not second in importance to this to have those institutions which have already been established here and which afford solid and reasonable promise of success. Whereas it appears that the Austin Theological Seminary, a long and growing institution which is located here, is in unfortunately situated, in the extreme eastern portion of the City and half way between two institutions for colored students, that its students professors and friends are dissatisfied; and. Whereas, there is reason for grave fear, in consequence that the Seminary, if it is not speedily removed from Austin altogether, if a suitable and satisfactory site is not speedily secured for it: and Whereas, there is an effort on foot to transfer Said Seminary to a position near the University, which effort has been Cordially endorsed by the Business League and the advisory Board of Said League, composed of many of the leading Citizens of Austin representing all shades of opinion and interest; and Whereas, a desirable site has already been purchased by friends of this movement and is now held by them at original cost price. Therefore, be it resolved by the Council: 1. To endorse this effort and Commend it to all the Citizens of Austin as worthy of their cordial and substantial support. 2. To grant that the street, which now separates the two portions of this proposed site, being that portion of Wichita street lying between West Twenty Seventh Street and west Twenty Sixth Street, be closed in the event of the purchase by the Seminary of Said site. 3. To appoint a Committee of four, two members of

612 of the Council and two of the Citizens of Austin, to Co-operate with the Committee, already appointed by the Business League and the newly appointed Citizens, to further the street Map called for with all possible expedition. On motion the Alderman Hampson was invited to address the Council on the resolution which he did and the Council adopted the resolution. Alderman Powell of the Police Committee stated that he had been informed by the Marshal that there was a Vacancy in the Police force, and he moved that the Marshal be requested to present the name of some person to fill the Vacancy. The motion was adopted. The Marshal presented the names of Wm Geo Sils Geo Sils Alderman Powell Crooker Van Rosenberg were appointed Deceased Policeman Tellers. The Tellers announced the following as the result of the Ballot, viz For Confirmation 14. against 0. City Clerk Leave On motion of Alderman Powell the City Absence Clerk was granted a leave of absence for three days. By Alderman Haynes an ordinance appropriating the Salaries officers & sum of $9700.00 for the purpose of laying salaries of employees officers & employees.
