Regular meeting of the City Council, Austin, Texas, January 20, 1908 H on F M Maddox, Mayor presiding; Roll called; Present Aldermen Armstrong, Crooker, Cuneo, Haynes, Meredith, Miller Moore, Moreland, Petri, Redd, Scott, Smith, Sutor & Wilhelm 14 Absent none On motion the minutes were approved as recorded by the Clerk without reading. Petitions, memorials, etc; Petition #2 by Eloch Sutor By Alderman Wilhelm Petitioner of Citizens on East 13th street asking to have certain done on that street; Read and on motion referred to the street Committee The Mayor laid before the Council the following petitions, viz; P L Meyer & agent Original petition Rec'd & ref'd P L Meyer ,agent ,asking to have certain Liquor licenses refunded, Read and on motion referred to the Committee on Claims & Accounts. Petition of I P Lochridge, asking to have certain pound fees refunded; referred to the the Claims & Accounts Committee; R J Brackenridge Building permit Petition of R J Brackenridge for building permit; Read and referred to the Fire Com Petition of W B Davis for permission to erect a shed in the Fire limits . The petition was granted by the following vote ; Yeas AldermenArmstrong, Crooker, Meredith, Miller ,Moore, Petri, Redd, Scott, Smith, Sutor & Wilhelm 11 Nays AldermenCuneo, Haynes & Moreland 3 Invitation rec'd Hose Co. The Mayor laid before the Council an invitation from North Austin Hose Co No 5 to attend a smoker & Oyster Roast to be given on the 31st of January 1908; On motion the invitation was accepted . Complaint of P & C Cantwell The Mayor laid before the Council a complaint from C G Cantwell & C C Palvador against Contractor Canion as to wages; Read and on motion referred to the ordinance Committee & City Attorney Reports of Standing Committees; Findings Committees Street Comm with Christian Church Streets cutting Alderman Scott for the street Committee ,presented a report stating that they had made an agreement with the Christian church for work made necessary by the cutting down of 8th & Colorado streets ,and recommending that an appropriation be made to carry out the agreement; On motion the report was laid over to come up with an ordinance appropriating the money for that purpose. Purchase of equipment Alderman Scott for the street Committee presented a report recommending the purchase of certain equipment for street work The report was read and on motion was referred to the street Committee ,to ascertain the cost of such equipments and report back to the Council. To Dr Quisenberry on alley. Alderman Scott for the street Committee to whom was referred the petition of Dr Quisenberry for permission to close alley, presented a report recommending that the petition be granted On motion the petition and report were referred to the City attorney. Alderman Scott for the street Committee presented a report recommending that the City appropriate a certain amount to assist in keeping in repair the speedway and streets in Hyde Park ,AldermanSutor moved that the report be laid For speedway on the table, which motion prevailed by the following vote; Yeas AldermenCrooker Haynes Miller MoorePetri Smith Sutor & Wilhelm 8 Nays Aldermen Armstrong, Cuneo, Meredith, Moreland, & Redd & Scott 6 Alderman Scott for the street Committee to whom was referred the matter of repairing the Fredricksburg road, presented a report stating that they had ordered

54 New road Cuneo the matter some temporary work done on said road, awaiting negotiations with Citizens for assistance in repairing said road,On motion of Alderman Cuneo the matter was referred to a special Committee of three& the Street Committee, who were directed to take the matter up with the County Commissioners and the Citizensand report at the next regular meeting of the Council; The Mayor appointed Aldermen Cuneo, Crooker & Petri as the sp special Committee; On motion of Alderman Scott the Mayor was added to the Committee . Alderman Redd for the Fire Committee presented the following report; Austin, Texas, Jany 20 1908 Fire Co. House Co. Gentlemen: Your Committee on Fire Dept to whom was referred the putting on new roof on Protection Fire Hall find that this roof has blown off in places and must be replaced at once and we beg leave to report that we have received bids for same as follows for a new tin roof : Max Arlitt $340,00 J O Buaas $323,00 J W Goslin $300,00 Gib Gay $280,00 . Mr Gay being the lowest bidder ,we recommend that his bid be accepted and that the Mayor be requested to enter into contrab with him for same and work to be done at once. W C Redd,Tom D Smith & C W Moore Committee on Fire Depat On motion the report was laid over to come up with an ordinance on the subject. H C Nolen damages to horse. Alderman Petri for the Claims and accounts Committee to whom was referrai a petition from H C Nolen for damages to horse in the sum of $300.00 presented a report recommending that Mr Nolen be allowed the sum of $75.00 in full of all claim for said horse On motion the report was adopted C & A-P.R. Vredenburg, Tax. Alderman Petri for the Claims and accounts Committee to whom was referred a petition from J L Vredenberg asking correction of assessment, presented a report stating that in their opinion the Council had no legal authority to grant the petition ,and recommending that the request be not granted;On motion the report was adopted C & A Weaver Pound fees. Alderman Petri for the Claims and Accounts Committee to whom was referred the petition of S H Weaver to have certain pound fees refunded, presented a report recommending that the petition be granted;On motion the report was adopted . St and Paving Fencing The Street and Paving Committee to whom was referred the matter of procuring a place for street and Sanitary teams presented a report recommending that all propositions heretofore submitted for permanent quarters be rejected and that the street Committee be instructed to rent quarters from Mr Stone corner of Red River and 4th street for the sum of $ 15.00 per month for all teams of the street and Sanitary Depts until permanent quarters can be secured On motion the report was adopted The Mayor laid before the Council the following communication; Austin, Texas, January 20th 19 Water & Light Sam P. Comm. To the City Council of the City of Austin, Texas Gentlemen: I am instructed by the Water & Light Commission of the City of Austin to return you the ordinance granting to the Consolidated Construction Company a franchise to erect a dam across the Colorado River,

New business; On motion of Alderman Haynes City Clerk Johnson was granted a leave of absence for two days ,commencing Jany 22nd 1908 . Alderman Scott offered the following resolution,which was read and adopted, Resolved that the Park Committee be instructed to have shade trees planted on thea sidewalks surrounding Hemphill,Brush and Wooldridge Parks on lines to be furnished by the City Engineer. Alderman Moore offered the following resolution ,which was read and adopted: Whereas,the late James S Hogg,at his demise,left a large desk of fine workmanship, which during his lifetime was constantly used by him,and by means thereof it becameof historic value,therefore Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin that the City purchase said desk,and that same be placed in the Mayors Officein the new City Hall, and that a plate be made and placed on said desk with the words " In memory of Governor James S Hogg,the Patriot and Statesman,the First Son of Texas Elected her Alderman Haynes offered the following resolution,which was read and adopted: Be it resolved by the City Council or the City of Austin:That the City Treasurer be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transfer from the account of the Interest and Sinking fund of Refunding Bonds,to the General fund the sum of $ 4000.00,to replace amount transferred to that fund in December 1907,to meet January interest. 56 Christian Church Grading the By Alderman Moore an ordinance appropriating the sum of $475.00 for the Purpose of paying the Christian Church for building wall near Churchcaused by re-grading the street near Church; The ordinance was read the first time and passed by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Armstrong, Crooker, Cuneo, Haynes, Meredith, Miller Moore, Moreland, Petri, Redd, Scott, Smith, Sutor, Wilhelm Nays none 14
Hogg Desk By Alderman Moore an ordinance appropriating the sum of $50.00 for the purpose of buying the desk formerly used by Governor Hogg -for the Mayors Office. The ordinance was read the first time and passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Armstrong, Crooker, Cuneo, Haynes, Meredith, Miller, Moore, Moreland, Petri, Redd, Scott, Smith, Sutor & Wilhelm Nays none; 14
Grading side walk 8th & Colorado sts By Alderman Scott an ordinance appropriating the sum of $50.00 for the purpose of grading the side walk at the corner of 8th and Colorado streets The ordinance was read the first time and passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Armstrong, Crooker, Cuneo, Haynes, Meredith, Miller, Moore, Moreland, Petri, Redd, Scott, Smith, Sutor & Wilhelm Nays none. 14
Extra Current Keany By Alderman Scott an ordinance appropriating the sum of $500.00 for the purpose of employing extra street labor and teams: The ordinance was read the first time and passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote: Yeas Aldermen Armstrong, Crooker, Cuneo, Haynes, Meredith, Miller, Mooer, Moreland, Petri, Redd, Scott, Smith, Sutor & Wilhelm Nays none . 14
Alderman Cuneo moved that the street Committee be instructed to take up the matter of street crossings and have same fixed, which motion prevailed. On motion the Council adjourned. Geo. A. Johnson City Clerk
