Austin Cemetery Site Selected, Engineering Funds Approved

Cemetery Decision: Council chose an 82-acre tract of land east of Tillietson Institute as the preferred location for a new city cemetery, pending negotiations with the landowners on price and permanent dedication terms.

Engineering Appropriation: Approved $100 in funding for extra engineering work through a new ordinance.

Paving Inspection Trip: Mayor Wooldridge and two council members were selected to travel to Dallas and Fort Worth to inspect paving methods and infrastructure.

Marshal Investigation Costs: Approved partial payment of $25 (reduced from $35) to stenographer F.H. Smith for work documenting an investigation into City Marshal Laughlin's conduct.

299 Friday October 15th 1909. The Council was called to order by the Mayorwith all members present,except Councilman Gracy,On motion leave of absence was grar ted to Councilman Gracy , until Oct 18th 1909. On motion Mayor Wooldridge was assigned to the duties of Supt Receipts,Disburse-ments and Accounts,during the absence of Councilman Gracy,by the following vote: YeasMayor Wooldridge,Councilmen Bartholomew,Hart & Powell 4 Nays none. By Councilman Powell an ordinance appropriating the sum of $ 100.00 for the purpose of paying for extra engineering work.The ordinance was read the first time,the rule suspended and the ordinance placed on its second reading by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Wooldridge,Councilmen Bartholomew,Hart & Powell 4 Nays none. The ordinance was read the second time and laid over until next meeting. On motion the Council recessed subject to call of the Mayor . See page 355 Oct ber 15th 1909. The Council was called to order by the Mayor,with all members present . On motion the Mayor,Councilmen Bartholomew& Powell ,were selected as a Committee to go to Dallas & Fort Worth to inspeetPaving,eto. During the absence of this Committe e,Counciman Gracy was selected as Mayor,pro tem and Councilman Hart was assigned to the Duties of Councilmen Bartholomew & Pow Powell by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge,Councilmen Bartholomew,Gracy,Hart & Powell 5 Nays none. Propositions for the establishment of a City Cemeterywere sub-mitted asfollows,to-wit. Chas Wentland ,a written proposition offering two different tracts. The Mayor submitted a verbal proposition from Mr Caswell. Geo Mendel Esq submitted a verbal proposition from Mr Ulit Mr Gregory submitted a verbal proposition from certain Gentlemen for a tract of land East of the City. After discussion of the various propositions ,both for and against, the Council took the matter under considerationand ,recessed subject to call. Monday Oct 18th 1909.P M. The Council was called to order by the Mayor,with all members present. Councilman Hart submitted to the Council a bill of F H Smith ,for Stenographic services in the investigation of the conduct of Marshal Laughlin,amounting to $35.00 Councilman Gracy moved that the bill be allowed for $ 25.00,provided Mr Smith would accept that amount in full payment for his services,which motion prevailed by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Wooldridge ,Councilmen Bartholomew,Gracy,Hart & Powell 5 Nays none. Councilman Bartholomew offered the following resolution,viz: Resolved that the tract of landEast of Tilletson Institute in this City ,of about eighty two ( 82) acres , and offered as a Cemetery site by Messrs A J Eilers, J C Kerby,Lynn Hunter,H E Ford and others,be declared the preference of the City --- Page break --- 390 • Council for Cemetery purposes ;provided that a satisfactory arrangement can be made with the owners of said property,looking to its destination in perpetuity for cemetery purposes,and provided further that other details as to schedule of prices,reasonable municipal regulation and other matters of importance to the public,can be mutually agreed upon between the City Council and the powners of said tract of land. The resolution was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge,Councilmen Bartholomew,Gracy,Hart & Powell 5 Nays none. On motion the Council adjourned • Geo. Johnson City Clerk
