Austin Schools Need $75,000 Bond Issue

School Funding Crisis: The Austin Business League petitioned the City Council to hold a special election by March 1, 1910, asking voters to approve $75,000 in school bonds to address the city's financial difficulties and fund school improvements and new buildings.

Infrastructure Improvements: Two neighborhoods—Clarksville and East 6th Street—requested the installation of water plugs and street lights, with requests referred to Councilman Bartholomew for investigation.

Street Department Budget: The Council approved a $2,500 appropriation to cover weekly payroll for the Street Department's labor costs.

Legal Settlement & Construction: The Council authorized the City Attorney to draft an ordinance settling a property damage lawsuit from Mrs. Grant and granted special permission for Sunday labor on the Littlefield Building construction project.

423 Regular meeting of the City Council: Austin, Texas, January 20, 1910. Hon A P Wooldridge, Mayor, presiding: Roll called: Present Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracy, Hart & Powell 5 Absent none. The minutes of the last regular and subsequent adjourned meetings were read and adopted. Petitions, memorials, etc: Petition Citizen Clarks ville for water & Light Citizen East Light By Councilman Bartholomew, petitions of Citizens asking to have Water plugs and Lights put up in what is known as "Clarksville" Read and on motion referred to Councilman Bartholomew for investigation and report. By Councilman Bartholomew petition of business men on East 6th street asking to have that portion of the City furnished with a system of street lights, which was read and referred to Councilman Bartholomew. Unfinished business: Appro Extra Labor The Mayor laid before the Council an ordinance appropriating the sum of $ 2,500.00 for the purpose of paying weekly pay rolls Street Dept, which was read the third time and passed by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracy, Hart & Powell 5 Nays none. New business: Proposition to settle Suit - Grant vs City Sidewalk Ordinance Councilman Powell submitted a verbal proposition from Dr A S Grant, in regard to a suit of Mrs Grant, for damages to property, caused by the City's cutting down the street in front of same. On motion the City Attorney was directed to bring before the Council an ordinance covering the proposition. By the Mayor. [one] two [when, the Civil ordinance] ordinances on the subject of Side walks, which were read the first time. On motion the Council recessed subject to call of the Mayor. January 24th 1910. The Council was called to order by the Mayor, with all members, except Councilman Powell, present. Rec & Resolution City Barn Permit Fire Limits By Councilman Hart, petition of Jas H Robertson Esq, asking per-mission to erect a barn on lots 2&3 Block 64, within the Fire limits, which petition was recommended by the Board of Fire Commissioners. The petition was granted by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracy, Hart. 4 Resolution for Contractor Little Field Bldg to use Sunday Labor Mayor Wooldridge offered the following resolution: Resolved that permission is hereby granted to the Contractor for the Littlefield Building to employ labor and do work, on Sunday January 23rd 1910, in the construc-tion of a temporary north wall in the barber shop of Reno & Reasonover on Congress Avenue. Such work in the present juncture of affairs in the construction of this building is, in the judgement of the Council a work of necessity. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracy, Hart & Powell 5 Nays none. Fine Tom Sobriske remitted. On motion of Councilman Hart the fine against Tom Sobriske in the Corporation court was remitted, on condition that he leave the City at once, by the following vote; Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracy, Hart & Powell 5 Nays none. --- Page break --- 424 Resolution Business League. prays that election be held for school. .The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution by the Business League. To the Honorable City Council of the City of Austin Be it resolvedthat,we the business league of AustinTexas,appreciating the present condition of the schools of Austin,and the financial difficulties in which the schools are placed under these conditions, and desiring to maintain the high place that Austin now holds in the esteem of the entire state and south as the centre of educational devo-lopment,we do respectfully petition your Honorable body that you do submit to the people at a special election not later than March 1st, 1910,proposition to vote on an issue of $ 75,000of school bonds,being assured that this amount is necessary for the City's immediate require-ments for school purposes,for betterments and new buildings (only.
