Austin Bans Prize Fight Movies, Updates Streets

Banned prize fight films: The council passed an ordinance prohibiting the exhibition of moving pictures showing prize fights, reflecting early 20th-century concerns about the sport's glorification.

509 Austin, Texas, July 21, 1910 The Council was Called to Order by the Mayor; Roll Called. Present: Mayor Wovednidge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Graacy, Kant & Poewle Absent: None The Minutes of the last regular subsequent adjourned meeting were read and approved. Fire @ Doehring Councilman Kant, to whom was referred the petition of Citizens Calling, that a fine assessed in the Recorder's Court against Collection suspended Christian Doehring, presented the following resolution: Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin: That the petition for the remission of the balance of cae fine, (amounting to $57.50) assessed against Christian Doehring in the Corporation Court, be and the same is hereby refused. That the collection of said fine be suspended until further Order of the City Council. The Resolution was adopted by the following Vote: Ayes: Mayor Wovednidge; Councilmen Bartholomew, Graacy, Kant & Poewle Noes: None. Sewan West The petition of Citizens, asking that the Sewan be required Avenue to extend the Sewan to West Avenue, was laid before the Council, and a petition of Citizens protesting against said extension was read, and the Matter discussed by Citizens for and against said extension, with no action taken for the present. The Council then recessed until 2:30 P.m. this date July 21st 1910, 2 P.m The Council was Called to Order by the Mayor with all Members present. The Ordinance was read the first time and passed under Suspension of the rules by the following Vote: Ayes: Mayor Wovednidge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Graacy, Kant & Poewle Noes: None. R.R. Switch. J.W. McGregory A petition was laid before the Council "An Ordinance to et al grant to J.W. McGregory, et al the right to Construct, Maintain and Operate a railroad track upon and across Calhoun Street in the City of Austin", which was read by Clerk and, upon consideration presented for the Present. The Mayor said before the Council An Resolution giving grades on Rio Grande Street from 17th to 19th Street. The resolution was read the 3rd time passed by the following Vote: --- Page break --- 510 Traffic across Colorado Bridge Councilman Woodridge, Councilman Bartholomew, Gracy, (Kart & Powell) 5 Nays None. By Councilman Kart: An Ordinance to amend an Ordinance entitled an Ordinance regulating traffic on and across the Avenue Bridge over the Colorado River at the foot of Congress Avenue, prescribing rules governing the same and to prevent the defacing of said bridge and prescribing Penalties for the Violation thereof, passed May 26. 1910. and approved May 26th, 1910. The Ordinance was read the first time and passed under suspension of the rules by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Woodridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracy, Kart and Powell Nays none. Street Grades. 17th St from San Jacinto to Red River The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution: Resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin: That grades given below be established as the permanent grades of the Center of 17th Street from San Jacinto to Red River Streets. The elevations are taken from the bench-mark at the Post Office building, at the North East Corner of Sixth and Colorado Streets. The points given are where grade changes: East Side of San Jacinto Street 548.81. Elevation unchanged 92 feet East of San Jacinto Street 543.97. “ “ “ 138 “ “ “ “ 541.47. Elgray free Lights in 12" nothing els On Motion the petition was granted, Provided that none of said lights be used and for a period of ten days only, by the following Vote: Yeas Mayor Woodbridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gray, Hart And Porbell Nays None. On Motion Councilman Bartholomew was 6 inch Main instructed to lay 6" main about 1800 ft from 3rd to 7th Street ordered in Hyde Park Avenue to lay 6" main about 1800 ft from 3rd to 7th Street with 3 hydrants, by the following Vote: Yeas Mayor Woodbridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gray, Hart & Porbell Nays None. The Mayor laid before the Council the following Communication from the City Attorney: Austin, Texas, July 26th 1910 The City Council Austin, Texas. Gentlemen: I beg to respectfully call your attention to the fact that Telephone Franchise the franchise granted to Boynton & Dale, under which the United Co. United Telphone Co. is now operating, requires the grantee and their assigns to furnish bond to the City of Austin, Conditioned that the City of Austin should be held harmless from damages on account of the Construction and Maintenance of the plant. The records of the City Clerks office disclose the fact that this bond was never filed with the City. If it should meet with your approval, I will notify the present holders of this franchise, that they must comply with the above requirement. Very respectfully Yours, J. Borden Blair City Attorney. Yeas Mayor Woodridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Hart & Powell Nays Councilman Gracey. On Motion of Councilman Hart to pay Pound fee of $1.50 paid by G.R. Tunnehill was refunded by the following Vote! Yeas Mayor Woodridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracey, Hart & Powell Nays None. On Motion the Council recessed subject to Call of the Mayor July 2nd 1910 The Council was Called to order by the Mayor with all Members present. Mayor Woodridge offered the following resolution! Approprialion to That five hundred and seventy nine & 80/100 dollars ($579.80) be purchase land for received by the City Council of Austin! street out lot 3 and the same is hereby appropriated out of the general fund Div "D" of the City of Austin for the purpose of purchasing and paying for a street Sixty (60) feet wide, out of Out Lot 3, Division "D", of the City of Austin, more particularly described as follows! "Beginning at a point in the south line of out Lot No 3. Division "D", 276 feet from its S.W. Corner, thence parallel with the west line of said out Lot; Northerly 310 feet to a point in the North line of said out lot 276 feet from its N.W. Corner, thence with said North line, Easterly, 60 feet to a point in same, thence parallel with the west line of said out Lot, Southerly 310 feet to a point in the south line of said Out Lot, thence with said South line, Westerly, 60 feet to the place of beginning." The resolution was read the first time and the rule suspended and placed on its second reading by the following Vote! Yeas Mayor Woodridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gracey, Hart & Powell Nays None. The resolution was read the second time and laid over. Leave of absence was granted by Engineer Fredell for 15 days Leave absence from about the 1st of August 1910-by the following Vote! E.J.
