New Sidewalk Rules, Street Grades

  • Sidewalk Enforcement & Construction:

    The City Attorney was directed to sue property owners who hadn't installed sidewalks. Separately, Capitol Lodge No. 25 received an extension for sidewalk construction, conditional on them either building a new structure or completing sidewalks by January 1912. New cement sidewalk contractors were also mandated to stamp their name and installation date.
  • City Infrastructure Improvements:

    The official grade was established for West Avenue between 17th and 19th streets, and funds were appropriated for a bridge at 5th and Nueces Street.
  • Citizen Petitions:

    The Council approved a petition to remit a $15.20 fine for an individual citizen, F. Mudd.

648 Regular meeting of the City Council: Austin,Texas, Feby 9th 1911. The Council was called to order by the Mayor: Roll called: Present Mayor Weeldridge, Councilmen Barthelemew, Gracy, Hart & Powell 5 Absent none. [illegible] The minutes of the last regular and recessed meetings were read and approved. Petitions, Memorials, etc: Peti-Trustees Capitol Leave in request sidewalk [illegible] F The Mayor laid before the Council a petition from Trustees of Capitol Ledge No 25 , asking 12 months time in which to put in Sidewalk on the North side of their property S E corner Brazes & 9th streets, which was read. . Mayor Weeldridge offered the following resolution: Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin: That an extension of time to January 1st 1912, is granted to Capitol Ledge No 25 I O O F ,Austin, Texas, at the expiration of which time it must build a sidewalk on the west side of its property on the corner of Ninth and Brazes streets of this City, and on the North side of said prop -erty.This resolution to be effective only upon said Ledge agreeing in writing to either begin the construction of a building on their property at the sight described above ,or failing so to do ,put down a sidewalk in front of the same on both Brazes and East Ninth streets. The resolution was adopted by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Weeldridge ,Councilmen Barthelemew, Hart & Powell 4 Absent Councilman Gracy 1 F Mullins remitted By Councilman Hart Petition from F Mudd asking to have a fine assessed in the Recorders court remitted . Councilman Hart moved that the petition be granted and the fine amoun-ting to $ 15.20 be remitted, which motion prevailed by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Weeldridge, Councilmen Barthelemew, Hart & Powell 4 Absent Councilman Gracy 1 Reports of City Officers: The Mayor laid before the Council the reports of the Marshal, the Matron of the Hospital, the City Health Officer and his Assistant, and the Sexton, which were read and ordered filed. New Business: Councilman Powell offered the following resolution: Be it resolved by the City Council of the Ceity of Austin: That the grade of West Avenue from the south side of 17th street to the south side of 19th street be and the same is hereby established as follows: Elevations are taken from the top of the fire plug at the northwest cor-ner of 17th street and West Avenue: assumed elevation 231.15. The Council was called to order by the Mayor with all members present. Paving Ordinance The Mayor laid before the Council an ordinance to provide for the manner of determining, after notice and by due process of law, the amount of special benefits to each parcel of abutting property, and to the owner thereof, upon any street ordered to be improved in the City of Austin; and to provide for the assessment of a part of the cost of such improvements against such owners and their property, and for the collection and enforcement thereof. The ordinance was read the first time and the rule suspended and it placed on its second reading by the following vote: Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Gray, Hart & Powell 5 Nays none. The ordinance was read the second time and laid over. The Council then adjourned. Jno. G. Johnson City Clerk
