    A permit was granted for an 82-light electric sign at 718 Congress Avenue, to be placed above the awning and across the sidewalk.
  • Street Food Vendor Denied:

    A petition from Geo W Mercer to sell hamburgers and sandwiches on city streets was unanimously refused.
  • Mandate for Underground Utilities:

    An ordinance was introduced requiring the local telephone company (Southwestern S.W. Tel & Tel Co) to construct underground conduits for its wires and cables throughout the city, pending further review.

635 Regular meeting of the City Council : Austin,Texas, October 16, 1913. The Council was called to order by the Mayor : Roll called : Present Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Absent none. The Minutes of the last regular and subsequent recessed meetings were read and adopted. The Mayor laid before the Council the reports of the Sanitary Inspector, the Sexton and the Inspector of Weights and Measures, which were read and ordered filed: The Mayor laid before the Council a petition of Citizens residing between Duval & Red River and 22nd & 24th streets,asking for relief on account of streets and Lights, which petition was read and ordered filed: The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution : Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin : J & E Keller Sign ✓ That Jno E Keller be and he is hereby authorized to install and maintain ,at 718 Congress Avenue ,an electric light sign. This sign is to be illuminated with about 82 electric lights , and to be of the dimensions of 11 feet 6 inches by 4 feet 8 inches,and is to above the awning and across the sidewalk. Be it further resolved : That the permit hereby granted is revocable at the pleasure of the City Council. The resolution was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Nays none. Approved, A P Wooldridge, Mayor. Councilman Powell presented his report ,as to his trip to the Good Roads Convention at Detroit ,Mich, which was read , he also made report of his expenses on said trip. No action taken on either. The Mayor laid before the Council an invitation from a Committee ,inviting the Council to attend a joint Smoker to be given by Austin Hook & Ladder Co No1 and Colorado Co No2, on the evening of October 16th 1913, at 8 O'clock P M . Geo W Mercer application to sell The Mayor laid before the Council a petition from Geo W Mercer, asking permission to sell Hamburgers etc. on Hamburgers & Sandwiches on the streets of the City,which petition was refused by the full Street refused ✓ vote of the Council. The Mayor laid before the Council a protest from Newsdealers,against allowing news carts to stand on Congress Avenue and 6th street in this City, which was read ,and laid over for further consideration. The Mayor laid before the Council an ordinance ordering and requiring the South Western S W Tel & Tel Co Telegraph and Telephone Company to construct certain underground Conduits on the Streets, Underground alleys and public grounds of the City of Austin ,Texas; and to place its wires, Cables and Conduits ✓ Conductors in the same ,and to connect the same with its other underground and overhead telephone construction as the same now exists and may hereafter exist. The ordinance was read the first time and laid over for one week. The Council then recessed subject to call. --- Page break --- C36 Oct 16th 1913 P M. The Mayor laid before the Council a resolution ordering the improvement of a certain part of 19th street in the City of Austin, and approving specifications proposals, contract and bond therefor. The resolution was read the 1st time and laid over. Improvements 19th St Guadalupe Street ✅ The Mayor laid before the Council a resolution ordering the improvement of a certain part of Guadalupe street in the City of Austin, and approving specifica-tions, proposal, contract and bond therefor.
