Mayor's Trip, City Contracts, & Tree Protection

  • Mayor's Research Trip:

    The mayor was granted a two-month leave with $250 for expenses to travel across the U.S. to study public improvement and "City building" methods for upcoming bond-funded projects.
  • City & Hospital Supply Contracts:

    Contracts were awarded for a wide range of city needs, including newspaper printing, meals for city prisoners, transportation of paupers, stock feed, cement, lumber, and all supplies for the City Hospital.
  • Sidewalk Widened to Save Trees:

    A resolution passed to widen the sidewalk on San Gabriel Street (33rd to 34th) to 10 feet, explicitly to preserve "attractive trees" and allow a resident to lay the new sidewalk adjacent to the curbing.

Engineer --- Page break --- 208 ...Councilman Bartholomew, Mayor Pro Tem in the chair: Councilman Powell offered the following resolution : Whereas, Mayor A P Wooldridgehas served over six years as Mayor of the City of Austin ,and during the entire time of his service.has not requested or been granted a leave of absence for the purpose of taking a vacation,but during all of said time has continuously devoted himself to his duties as Mayor; and Whereas, the City of Austin has recently determined to issue a large amount of bonds for the purpose of effecting certain public improvements ,and, A P Wooldridge inprosecuting such improvements as this City contemplates,it is deemed expediLeave of absence -ent and advantageous to the public interest that some competent person be commissioned to visit varios Cities in the United States for the purpose of obtaining data based uqon the experience of such cities in such matters : Now, therefore, Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin : That Mayor Wooldridge be and he is hereby granted a leave of absence for the period of two months commencing July 8, 1915, and that he be commissioned to visit such Cities in the United States and elsewhere as his judgement may dictate to obtain such data as this City may require in making the improvements contem-platedin the most intelligent and economical manner and according to the latest and most approved methods.of City building: Be it resolved further , that the sum of two hundred and fifty ($ 250.0 ) dollars be and the same is hereby appropriated out of the General Contingent fund of the City of Austin ,for the purpose of paying in part the expenses of said Mayor Wooldridge, and that the City Clerk be and is hereby instructed to issue the warrant of the City of Austin for such amount payable as above ,and to deliver same to said Mayor A P Wooldridge before July 8th 1915. The resolution was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 4 Nays none. June 29th 1915. All present: Councilman Haynes presented bids for Supplies for the City for the term ending December 31st 1915 1915 ,which were opened& read and the following awards made Bids for in accordance with said bids. Supplies For Newspaper printing , awarded to Statesman Pub Co, For Meals for City Prisoners ,awarded to Mrs A E Wheeler. .Hauling White paupers & Coffins ,awarded to S E Rosengreh Hauling Colored paupers , awarded to W M Tears Stock Feed , awarded to Marks Grain Co, --- Page break --- 299 .For Cement , Austin Builders Supply Co, For Lumber , Calcasieu Lumber Co, Bids for Castings, Hardware, Drugs, Milk , Butter, for Hospital Meat for Hospital & Hardware, were referred to the heads of the different Depts for calculation and report. June 30th 1915, All members present : Councilman Haynes moved that the bids of the following parties for supplying the City Hospi -tal with the articles named for the six months ending Dec 31st 1915, bbe accepted: Tom D Smith, Groceries, Excelsoir , Meat Market, Meat Acme Creamery, Butter & Butter Milk, F Barge , Waest Milk, Spalding Drug Store, Drugs, The resolution was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Nays none, Approved, A P Wooldridge, Citizen Bank overdraft. Councilman Haynes presented bill of the Citizens Bank & Trust Co ,amounting to $ 11.22, for interest on overdrafts Sanitary Sewer fund for the month of June 1915, and moved that the amount be appropriated out of the Sanitary Sewer Earnigs fund , to pay said bill, which motion prevailed by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Kouneilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Nays none. Councilman Powell offered the following resolution : Whereas, in consideration of the fact that San Gabriel street between 33rd & 34th stree in this City is a short ,obseure streetand is not likely to be used to any considerable extent for traffic or any sort , and Whereas, in consideration of the meritorious plea , as belived, of Mrs R L Pennto enable her to save a number of attractive treesdistributed in a sort of natural park fashionon Side Walk San Gabriel bet 33rd & 34th the sidewalk on said San Gabriel street from 33rd to 34th streets, Now, therefore, Resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin, Texas: That the sidewalk space on the east side of SanGabriel street between 33rd & 34th streets of this City be widened from 7 ½ feet to 10 feet and a permit be granted the said Mrs R L Penn to lay the sidewalk adjacent to the curbing on said San Gabriel Street between 33rd & 34th streets. The resolution was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Nays none, Approved, A P Wooldridge, Mayor. f. Johnson City Clerk The Council then adjourned.
