  • Jitney Taxi Regulations Debated:

    The city clerk verified over 600 valid signatures on a petition protesting a new ordinance to license and regulate "Jitneys" (early shared taxis or buses).
  • City Bond Offers Rejected:

    The council unanimously voted to reject all three bids received for the city's bond issuance.
  • New Sidewalk Approved:

    A resident was granted permission to construct a new sidewalk along Pearl Street.

. Regular meeting of the City Council : Austin,Texas, July 08, 1915: The Council was called to order by the Mayor: Roll called : Present Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Absent none. On motion the reading of the minutes was postponed until the next meeting; The Mayor laid before the Council the following report from the City Clerlk: Report City Clerk Jitney petition The State of Texas County of Travis, Know all men by these presents : That I, Jno ,0, Johnson,City Clerk of the City of Austin,Texas,do hereby certify that,in accordance with the provisions of Articles 9 & 10 of the Charter of the City of Austin I have examined the petitions protesting against the passage of the ordinance entitled "An ordinance to define the term "Jitney" ; to license and regulate the operation of jitney'son the streets and public places of the City of Austin ;and prescribing penalties for the violation thereof",said ordinance having been passed by the City Council of the City of Austin on June 17th ,1915, and said petition having been filed in this office on the 26th day of June A D 1915.;and by comparison with the certified list of the qualified voters of the City of Austin on file in my office,I find that said petition shows that nine hundred and fifty seven signatures are signed to said petition ;that sixhundred and twenty one qualified voters signed the same in accordance with the terms of the Charter,and that the names of three hundred and thirty six of the signers of the said petition do not appear on said certified list of qualified voters , according to the terms of said Article 9 of said Charter. Bids for bonds .The Mayor laid before the Council three bids for the bonds to be issued by the City, which were read,and a motion made by the Mayor ,that all of the bids be rejected,which motion was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Nays none. Mayor Wooldridge moved that the City Clerk be directed to return to all bidders their bids and certified Checks, which motion pr vailed. by the following vote : Yeas Mayor Wooldridge, Uouncilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 5 Nays none. The Mayor laid before the Council the reports of the Asst City Clerk & the City Marshal which were read and ordered filed . --- Page break --- Petition L. J. Williams Gasoline Tank A. J. Zilker Property lines Contract Austin Oakal Mfg Co. Paul Fitzgerald Fine remitted W. D. Miller Ass't Pound Master Fine refunded --- Page break --- 811 ..Councilman Powell offered the following resolution : Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin that Mr H A Thomson beand Mr H.A. Thomson is hereby granted permission to construct a sidewalk three and one-half feet in width Sidewalk adjacent to his property along the west side of Pearl street and north from 17th street, the inside line of this walk to located on the property line. The resolution was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Councilmen Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell & Anthony 4 Nays none, Approved , E C Bartholomew, Mayor, Pro Tem. July 12th 1915: The Council was called to order by Councilman Bartholomew, Mayor Pro Tem,with all members present ,except Mayor Woolridge. J.B.Webb Councilman Haynes presente the resignation of Mr J B Webb ,as a member of the Resignation Board of Equalization, which was read and accepted by the following vote : Member Bd Yeas Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 4 Equalization Absent Mayor Wooldridge 1 Jas Helger Councilman Haynes nominated Mr James Helger ,to be a member of the Board of Equalization, Bd Equalization vice Mr J B Webb ,resigned, which nomination was conformed by the following vote : Yeas Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew & Powell 3 Not voting Councilman Haynes 1 Absent Mayor Wooldridge, 1 The Council then adjourned.
