    Several new auto driver licenses were granted, and one driver, whose license was previously suspended for intoxication, had it restored after promising good conduct.

326 Regular meeting of the City Council: Austin, Texas: August 19, 1915 The Council was called to order by Mayor Pro tem E C Bartholomew: Roll called: Present Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew & Haynes 3 Absent Councilman Powell 1 Absent excused Mayor Wooldridge 1 The minutes of the regular meetings of August 5th & 12th, and recessed meetings were read and adopted: Applications from the following named persons for Drivers of Autos, were presented, read and on motion same were granted by the following vote: Drivers license Yeas Councilmen Bartholomew, Anthony & Haynes 3 Absent Councilman Anthony 1 Viz: Simon Lundberg,409 East 6th street. L K Brill, 1109 West 9th street . Andrew L Williams, 1304 Willow street. Rufus B Wright, 2614 Speedway. Cullie Hedspeth, 1713, East 4th street. Chas Suhr, South Austin. No number. I G Jones, 2406 Speedway. F J Merritt, appeared before the Council and stated that his license as Drive F J Merritt, Driver's license restored had been suspended by the Marshal,for intoxication, and asked that the license be restored, promising to not let this happen again. On motion he was excused and his badge restored by the following vote: Yeas Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew & Haynes 3 Nays none. Louis Klein, appeared before the Council and asked that a pound fee paid by Louis Klein no fee remitted him be remitted and refunded. On motion his request was granted by the following vote: Yeas Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew & Haynes 3 Nays none. Councilman Haynes presented the report of the Sanitary Inspector for the month of July 1915, which was read and ordered filed. Councilman Haynes to whom was referred the petition of Citizens asking that Petition Citizens to pave Bell Street the name of Bell street in this City, be changed to West 7th street,presented the following report & resolution: Whereas, the citizens and property owners on Bell street ,which street is located one block north of West 6th street,and extends parallel with same from --- Page break --- 727 *from Baylor to Blanco street,have filed with the Council a petition asking that the said Bell streetbe officially designated as West 7th streetas a public convenience and to avoid confusion that now exists in designating residences on said street. Now therefore : Be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin : That the said street now designated on the maps of the City as Bell street,shall be officially known in future as Bell-or West 7th street ,and the Assessor & Collector of taxes be and is hereby notified to note such official change on the maps of the City in his office . The resolution was adopted by the following vote: Yeas Councilmen Anthony,Bartholomew & Haynes 3 Absent Councilman Powell 1 Bill for Bernhart accepted, approved The Chair laid before the Council a bill of H B Bernhart,Esq, Asst City Attorney, for certified copy of opinion rendered in ex parte Sullivan case by the Court of Criminal Appeals ,which was used in the Jitney case . On motion the bill was allowed and ordered paid ,out of the General Contingent fund, by the following vote.: Yeas Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, & Haynes 3 Absent Councilman Powell 1 August 21st 1915. The Chair laid before the Council the following resolution : Resolved that Fannie Montgomy Davisbe authorized to erect an iron stairway from the walk to the second story of the building owned by her on the corner of Congress Avenue and 7th street ;said stairway to be on the north side of said building and over the stairway leading to the basement of said building; said stairway to form and be used as the lower portion of a fire escape required by law for said building . Councilman Anthony offered the following Augustian 1915. r solution Re it resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin: That at request of the Board of Fire Commissioners of the City, the sum of fifty dollars be appropriated out of the general fund of the City, towards the expense of sending Oscar Wedistrom, Chief of the Austin Fire Department, to the convention of Fire Chiefs at Cincinatti Ohio, on the 31st day of August 1915. The resolution was adopted by the following vote : Yeas Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes & Powell 4 Nays none. Expenses of Fire Dept. to Convention The Chair laid before the Council the following communication: Austin, Texas, August 23rd 1915. To the Hon Mayor & City Council , Austin, Texas. Gentlemen: The Labor Unions of Austin are planning their big celebration to be held at Lake Austin ,Monday ,Sept 6th. The new dam is an object of great interest to the inhabitants of all nearby towns. The railroads have been asked for and in all probability will grant special rates into Austin for this day. Therefore I hereby petition your body to grant me the privilege of staging , at Lake Austin Baseball Park, a gigantic, educational, pyrotecnic exhibit, same to last from about 8:00 P M until 10.30 P M, Monday Sept 6th , and Jno Dodson Pay for entertainment in return for this privilege I propose to do expensive advertising in all adja-cent trade territory, with the end in view of getting our neighboring people into the habit of making Austin their regular outing place. We have a wonderful opportunity with our ideal boating , bathing and fishing resorts to draw outside people to Austin ,not once but many times. The trades Council plan dancing, racing, base Ball, Skating, Boating, etc, for their program, and with your permission I will spend about $ 600.00, in presenting to the people of Austin and Austin's guests of that day an evening's entertainment , both interesting and educational. The question of City tax has been propounded , and in as much as this display will work for the good of Austin and her Merchants, I respectfully request that, if this exhibit is subject to taxation , same be refused for the benefit of the City as a whole.
