BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS: That the assessment against the said S. J. Look for an automobile in the amount of $400.00 for the year 1917 be and the same is hereby canceled and annulled, and the City Assessor and Collector of this city is instructed to correct the records of his department in accordance with the provisions of this resolution. The Resolution was adopted by a vote of 4 yeas. APPROVED, March 7, 1918: A. P. Wooldridge, Mayor. The Mayor offered the following Resolution: Whereas, it appears from the attached statement of Arthur A. Arthur A. Stiles assm't Stiles that improvements were assessed against his property situated on a lot 108X128 feet fronting on Tom Green Street of Outlot No. 3, Division "D" of the City of Austin, Texas, in the amount of One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) as of January 1st, 1917; and Whereas, it appears from the attached statement of the said Arthur A. Stiles that said improvements did not exist upon said premises on the 1st day of January, 1917, which statement of the said Arthur A. Stiles is concurred in by a notation by the Board of Equalization on the record of the assessment of said lot for the year 1917, but Whereas, the said correction as made by the Board of Equalization was not carried into their final report of assessed values for the City of Austin for the year 1917, thus leaving said $1000.00 charge continuing against said property, Now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS: That for the purpose of correcting the error hereinabove set out, the said Arthur A. Stiles have credit for the year 1917 against said property in the amount of $1,000.00 erroneously assessed against same for improvements which did not at that time exist upon said property, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL: That the Assessor and Collector of this city credit his assessment rolls in accordance with the provisions of this resolution. Bouldin Rector, which Opinion of city attorn'y. woman police assistant etc. had been requested by Councilman Haynes, was read by the Mayor to the effect that the Council's making appropriations for the salaries of a woman police assistant and a whole-time woman pure food inspector did not create, or seek to create, a new office, and that therefore the Superintendent of Receipts, Disbursements and Accounts could legally approve items for their salaries, notwithstanding the appropriations were made by less than a majority of four-fifths. Purchase of Pulmotor recommended
Health Officer, and C. E. Leonard, City Engineer, and emphasizing the importance of the city's purchasing a pulmotor to be kept at the Central Fire Station, for use in cases of drowning or asphyxiation, was read. The Council agreed informally that the purchase should be made. The Mayor laid before the Council "An ordinance to prohibit dealers in hot or cold drinks, or non-alcoholic drinks, and restaurant keepers, from permitting music to be played or musical instruments to be exhibited, and prohibiting dancing, in their said places of business, and providing a penalty therefor." 197 Prohibiting Dancing in Drinking Places The Ordinance was read the first time and laid over for further consideration and action. At the afternoon session, with Councilmen Bartholomew and Haynes absent, the minutes of Jan. 24, Jan. 31, Feb. 2, Feb. 6, Feb. 7, Feb. 8, Feb. 13, Feb. 14, Feb. 15, Feb. 16, Feb. 20, and Feb. 21, 1918, were read and adopted by a vote of 3 yeas. The Council then adjourned.

The Council was called to order by the Mayor: Present, Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, and Powell, 4; absent, Councilman Haynes.
J. A. Vance Special Policeman Councilman Anthony nominated J. A. Vance to be a special policeman without pay. He was confirmed by the following vote: Yeas--Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew and Powell, 3; Councilman Anthony not voting. Mrs. Annie B. Myrick - Cus- todian of Barton Springs Councilman Bartholomew nominated Mrs. Annie B. Myrick to be custodian of Barton Springs for the bathing season of 1918 in accordance with the terms of a contract to be drawn by the City Attorney. The nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Yeas--Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony and Powell, 3; Councilman Bartholomew not voting. The Mayor offered the following Resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That for good and sufficient reasons unto the City Council shown, and particularly for the reasons that Monte Simmons is an industrious and generally law-abiding negro, and that his wife gave provocation for the abusive language for which he was fined in Cause No. 12782, Corporation Court of the City of Austin, Texas, one-half or $7.40 of the fine and costs assessed against him in said cause, amounting to $14.80, be and the same is hereby remitted. Monte Simmons fine remitted. The Resolution was adopted by a vote of 4 yeas. APPROVED, March 8, 1918: A. P. Wooldridge, Mayor. The Council then adjourned.
