9 REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, June 06, 1918. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call disclosed the following present: Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes, and Powell, 5; absent none. The minutes of previous meetings to and including that of June 4 were read and approved by a vote of 5 yeas, no nays. Members of the Colored Welfare Committee, including Dr. W. H. Crawford, W. M. Tears, L. C. Anderson, Mrs. M. A. B. Fuller, J. W. Frazier, and E. F. Dennis, were present, and Dr. Crawford, their chairman, read the first monthly report of the Committee to the Council. The report was ordered filed. Miss Dorsey Spiller, municipal nurse, and Mrs. Frank Buchner, police assistant, read their reports for May to the Council, which also were ordered filed. The report of W. A. Alff, city sexton, for May was read by the Mayor and ordered filed, as was the City Engineer's report and final estimate on the construction of the Camp Mabry sanitary sewer line. The draft of an ordinance relating to changes of trackage of the I. & G. N. and H. & T. C. railways, in Third street, was presented by S. W. Fisher and read. It was withdrawn in order to be put into final shape. AFTERNOON SESSION: All members present. The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution: Whereas, F. C. Verrell on May 20th, 1918, paid for a public service car license, the same being No. 54; and Whereas, on the 30th day of May, 1918, the said F. C. Verrell was appointed a hoseman in the Fire Department of the City of Austin, Texas, and ceased thereafter to drive said public service car and wishes to surrender his license for said publicly driven service car; and Whereas, the said F. C. Verrell on the 20th day of May, 1918, paid Twelve Dollars and Fifty Cents ($12.50) as a license tax upon said public service car; Now, therefore, RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS: That said license to drive said public service car No. 54 be and the same is hereby cancelled and annulled, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL: That the sum of Twelve Dollars and Ten Cents ($12.10) be and the same is hereby appropriated out of the General Contingent Fund of the City of Austin, Texas, as a refund to the said F. C. Verrell for the unused part of said public service car license. The resolution was adopted by the following vote: Yeas, Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes, and Powell, 5; nays none. APPROVED, June 6, 1918: A. P. Wooldridge, Mayor. The reports of the City Health Officer, the City Sealer of Weights and Measures, the Fire Marshal, the Assessor and Collector, and the Chief of Police, for the month of May, and that of the Superintendent of the Water, Light and Power Department for April, were read and ordered filed. Councilman Haynes offered the following resolution: RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That Fred Sterzing, Assessor and Collector of Taxes, be and he is hereby granted leave of absence for two weeks beginning Monday, June 10, 1918. --- Page break --- The resolution was adopted by a vote of 5 yeas, no nays. APPROVED, June 6, 1918: A. P. Wooldridge, Mayor. The Mayor read to the Council a proposed statement to the voters of the city relative to the type of sewage disposal plant to be adopted in the event of the proposed bond issue carrying on June 18. The Council then adjourned. V. E. Martin City Clerk SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, June 7, 1918. RFD No. 1, Austin, Texas, The Mayor laid before the Council the application of C. R. Middleton for public service car license on his Ford automobile, Factory Number 2441387 (no State Highway Department number given), which was granted by a vote of 4 yeas, no nays, Councilman Haynes being absent. The application of the Liberty Motor Bus Company, Camp Mabry, Texas, for public service car license on a Nash machine, No. 27694, was likewise granted by unanimous vote. The Council then adjourned. V. E. Martin City Clerk SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, June 8, 1918. The Mayor laid before the Council the application of Mrs. H. H. Leonard, 1101 Trinity street, for public service car license on her Ford car, No. 70812, which was granted by a vote of 5 yeas, no nays. V. E. Martin City Clerk SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, June 11, 1918. The Council met with all members present except Councilman Haynes. Councilman Anthony nominated T. J. Cole to be a motorcycle policeman. The nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Yeas, Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew and Powell, 3; Councilman Anthony not voting.
