113 REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, January 02, 1919. The Council was called to order by the Mayor, roll call showing the following present: Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Anthony, Bartholomew, Haynes, and Powell, 5; absent none. The minutes of December 26, 27 and 31, 1918, were read, and approved by a vote of 5 yeas, no nays. The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS: That a permit is hereby granted to Jas. A. Nelson to install and maintain a gasoline tank to be approved by the Superintendent of Police and Public Safety under the sidewalk in front of No. 2203 East avenue in the City of Austin, Texas, and BE IT RESOLVED FURTHER: That in connection with this gasoline tank hereby authorized to be installed the said Jas. A. Nelson is likewise authorized to install and maintain a five gallon gasoline pump to be located at the curb line in front of No. 2203 East avenue in a position to be designated by the Superintendent of Streets and Public Improvements, said gasoline pump to be of the most modern and approved construction and design and subject to the approval of the Superintendent of Police and Public Safety, and BE IT RESOLVED FURTHER: That the said Jas. A. Nelson shall install and maintain at the top of and upon the gasoline pump hereby authorized an electric light of not less than forty (40) watt power and placed in a globe of not less than ten (10) inches in diameter, which electric light must be kept illuminated not less than three hours daily between the hours of six and twelve o'clock P. M., during the existence of this permit, and BE IT RESOLVED FURTHER: That the hose through which the gasoline is conveyed by pumping or otherwise from the pump hereby authorized to be placed in front of No. 2203 East avenue must be kept when not in actual use, neatly coiled and stored in a receptacle provided for such hose in the pump authorized to be installed or suspended from a suitable bracket attached to the pump, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the work under this resolution authorized to be installed and maintained must be installed and maintained, where not otherwise assigned, under the immediate supervision of the City Engineer of Austin, Texas, who is hereby authorized to prescribe necessary specifications for the work herein authorized to be done, and BE IT RESOLVED FURTHER AND FINALLY: That this permit is granted only for the installation of a gasoline tank and pump and does not include the installation or construction of a storage box for hose underneath the sidewalk and that this permit is granted and must be accepted as revocable at any time in the pleasure of the City Council. The resolution was adopted by a vote of 5 yeas, no nays. APPROVED, Jan. 2, 1919: A. P. Wooldridge, Mayor. The nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Yeas, Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Haynes, and Powell, 4; nays none; Councilman Anthony not voting. Mr. Anthony nominated Nolen Miller and Fillmore Peterson (former firemen who resigned to enter the army) to be hosemen. The nominations were confirmed by the following vote: Yeas, Mayor Wooldridge, Councilmen Bartholomew, Haynes, and Powell, 4; nays none; Councilman Anthony not voting. Firemen confirmed: Nolen Miller & Fillmore Peterson A petition was presented in behalf of D. K. Taylor, policeman, asking that the Council reconsider its action of Dec. 27, 1918, suspending Mr. Taylor from the police force for a period of ten days. No action was taken on the petition. Crosby, secretary of the Travis County Council of Defense, relative to the providing of employment for returning soldiers. The Council then adjourned. R.
