    An erroneous 1919 property tax assessment was canceled for A. Y. McReynolds, as the improvements on the property had burned down the previous year.

361 REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, July 29, 1920. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Alford, Graham, Haynes and Ward, 5; absent, none. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Councilman Haynes were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Alford, Graham, Haynes and Ward, 5; nayes, none. A communication from Mrs. Lewis Hancock, presented by Geo. E. Shelley, Attorney, was read and upon motion of Councilman Graham was referred to Councilman Ward for his report back to the Council, by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Alford, Graham, Haynes and Ward, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Haynes moved that the City Clerk be instructed to draw a warrant out of the General Contingent Fund, in the amount of Six Dollars and Twenty-five Cents ($6.25), payable to Fred Sterzing, Assessor and Collector, being a refund on service car license unused, issued to Jim Finnegan. Motion carried by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Alford, Graham, Haynes and Ward, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the sum of Four Hundred Ninety-two Dollars and Twenty-four Cents ($492.24) be and the same is hereby appropriated out of the General Contingent Fund of the City of Austin, Texas, in payment of the amount due and owing by the City Assessor and Collector for the School Fund's share of interest and penalties collected on taxes during the months of April, May and June, 1920, and said amount is hereby made payable to the Treasurer of the Austin Public Schools; itemized statements of amounts under this appropriation being attached hereto, same being certified as correct by Fred Sterzing, Assessor and Collector, and made the basis of this resolution. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Alford, Graham, Haynes and Ward, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: Whereas, Mrs. C. A. Stevens, acting for A. Y. McReynolds, has made affidavit that the assessment of improvements on the west 60X110 feet of lots 4 and 5, Block 4, Outlots 72 and 73, Division "B", of the City of Austin, in the name of said McReynolds for the year 1919 is erroneous, in that the said improvements were burned in the spring of 1918 and therefore not taxable for 1919. Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby authorized to cancel said assessment and to take credit for the amount of said tax, $2.34. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Councilman Graham were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Pro tem H. L. Haynes, Councilmen Alford, Graham and Ward, 4; nayes, none, Mayor Yett absent. The claim of R. J. Wallace for one horse was read and upon motion of Councilman Ward same was referred to the City Attorney and City Engineer, by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Pro tem H. L. Haynes, Councilmen Alford, Graham and Ward, 4; nayes, none; absent, Mayor Yett. C. L. Graham City Attorney Pro tem The expense account of C. L. Woodward, Chief of the Fire Department, was read and Councilman Ward moved that the same be allowed. Motion carried by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Pro tem H. L. Haynes, Councilmen Alford, Graham and Ward; 4, nayes, none, Mayor Yett absent. Councilman Alford moved that the Street Department be instructed to remove the limbs extending from the oak tree growing on the property of Mrs. Robert J. Hammond on West 8th Street. Motion carried by the following vote: Mayor Pro tem Haynes, Councilmen Alford, Graham and Ward, 4; nayes, none, absent, Mayor Yett. The following monthly reports were read and ordered filed: Fred Sterzing, Assessor and Collector; A. H. Anderson, Public Weigher; James H. Maxwell, Sealer of Weights and Measures; Mrs. R. C. Walker, Pure Food Inspector; Dr. C. H. Brownlee, City Health Officer; J. D. Platt, Chief of Police, and J. D. Copeland, Chief of Police Pro tem; Mr. A. A. Biebel, Meat and Dairy Inspector. J. F. Littlefield City Clerk Filed Mayor Pro tem Haynes introduced the following ordinance: "AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION I OF AN ORDINANCE ENTITLED 'AN ORDINANCE REGULATING AND FIXING FARES WHICH MAY BE CHARGED BY PERSONS, FIRMS, AND CORPORATIONS OPERATING STREET RAILWAYS FOR THE CARRYING OF PASSENGERS IN THE CITY OF AUSTIN, AND REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH', PASSED AND APPROVED MAY 20, 1920."
