City Hall's Summer Perks and Hospital Funding

    City office employees will enjoy half-day Saturdays (starting at noon) for the summer, from June 1st through October 1st.
  • Hospital Renovation Bonds Delayed:

    Due to an unfavorable bond market, the city decided to postpone the sale of bonds for hospital renovations and a new nurses' home, opting to proceed with planning only for now.
  • Property Value Adjustment:

    The City Attorney was instructed to prepare a resolution for a reduction in the assessed value of the J.V. Hume property.
  • New Electric Signs Approved:

    Permits were granted for installing electric signs at prominent downtown locations, including 5th and Lavaca Streets and the American Cafe on Congress Avenue.

464 i REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, May 31, 1921. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; absent, none. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Councilman Haynes were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The Council instructed J. Bouldin Rector, City Attorney, to prepare a resolution granting a reduction in the value of the J. V.Hume property. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the office employees of the City of Austin be allowed one-half Saturday holidays (from 12:00 of clock noon), beginning June 1st and ending October lst, 1921, same as last year. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none, The application of Billy Ebner to erect an electric sign at the corner of 5th and Lavaca Streets and the American Cafe, corner 3rd Street and Congress Avenue, having been approved by P. R. Mitchell, City Electrician, was granted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Searight nominated W. R. Davis as assistant bookkeeper in the sewer Earnings Department to succeed H. B. Claggett, resigned, Nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres and Haynes, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Searight not voting. The resignation of Eugene T. Smith as Cashier of the Water, Light and Power Department was read and upon motion of Councilman Haynes was accepted, effective May 31st, 1921, by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none, The Council then recessed, SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, May 31, 1921, The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; absent, none. City Attorney reported that he had investigated the bond market and found that owing to the condition of same, he believed the hospital bonds recently voted, if sold now, would not bring more than 93 cents, which would entail a loss of about $2,000.00 to the City. He suggested that it be ascertained what hospital repairs are now necessary and arrangements made with a contractor to accept the bonds at the quotation in force at the date of 1 finishing the work. It was finally decided to proceed with all physical arrangements at the hospital, in the way of planning a nurses home and listing necessary equipment and leave the financial arrangements for settlement later. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; absent, none. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Councilman Haynes were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none, A committee composed of Woodie Gilbert, J. W. Ezelle, W. E. Long and A. P. Watson appeared before the Council and asked the privilege of using Barton and Pease Parks as a free camping ground for tourists. The matter was taken under advisement by the City Council, Councilman Copeland nominated Mrs. R. C. Roberdeau as a member of the Advisory Board of the City Hospital. Nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Copeland not voting. Councilman Eyres nominated A. J. Anderson, 2108 Sabine Street, as City Electrician. Nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Eyres not voting. The monthly reports of Dr. A. A. Biebel and Mrs. R. C. Walker, Pure Food Inspectors, were read and ordered filed. The Council then recessed, SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, June 7, 1921.
