475 REGULAR MEETING OF THT CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texan, July 07, 1921. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; absent, none, The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Council man Copeland, were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyrce, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The communication of L. L. Campbell was read and ordered filed. A committee consisting of W. H. Crawford and others, representing the St. John's Encampment appeared before the City Council and requested certain street improvements, street sprinkling, parade accommodations and concessions on water and light service, which matters were upon motion of Councilman Searight referred to the various heads of the de- partments for attention and action theroon by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Upon the recommendation of C.. E. Leonard, City Engineer, the application of the Hart Tire Company for permission to install a gasoline tank at the corner of East Fifth and Brazos Streets was granted, with the provision that same be erected under the city ordinances governing same, by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Copeland introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIT. OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That one-half of the fine and costs, amounting to Ten Dollars and Eighty Cents ($10.80), assessed against W.S.Cooper in Cause #15149 in the Corporation Court of the City of Austin, Texas, for violating the traffic ordinance, be and the same is hereby remitted; and EE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the City Clerk he and he is hereby instructed to draw city warrant for the sum of Five Dollars and Forty Cents ($5.40), or one-half of the above fine and costs, payable to said W.S. Cooper. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Bearight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Copeland introduced the following resolution: Whereas, M. lHernandez, a Mexican woman, was fined in Cause No.15192 in the Corporation Court of the City of Austin, Texas, on the 22nd day of June, 1921, for the offense of vagrancy, said fine and costs amounting to Nineteen Dollars and Eighty Cents ($19.80); and Whereas, said defendant has lain out in jail Nine Dollars ($9.00) of said fine, leaving a balance cwing of Ten Dollars and Eighty Cents ($10.80); and Whereas, the defendant has three small children, ranging from four to seven years, dependent upon her; Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: -1 i 476 That in consideration of the above facts, the balance of the fine amounting to Ten Dollars and Eighty Cents ($10.80), be and the same is hereby remitted. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Byres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Upon the recommendation of Sam D.Griffin, Chief of Police, Councilman Copeland nominated Louis D. Iyons, Colored, as a special policeman of the City of Austin. Said nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilman Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Copeland not voting. The communication of Will L. Vining was read and referred to Councilman Eyres by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynés and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The monthly reports of Fred Sterzing, Assessor and Collector, Bob Rockwood, Fire Marshal, A. S. Anderson, Public Weigher, Dr. A.A. Biebel, Meat and Dairy Inspector, Mrs. E. C. Walker, Pure Food Inspector, and J. A. Warren, Bookkeeper and Cashier of the Street and Sewer Departments, were read and ordered filed. The Mayor introduced the following resolution: Whereas, it has come to the attention of the City Council that the Amateur Choral Club has made an engagement with the Anna Pavlowa Company to appear in Austin during its Texas tour next winter, provided that the Majestic Theatre can be secured for such engagement; and Whereas, it has been further made known that the Southern Enterprises operating said theatre has instructed Mr. E. C. Jeffres, its local manager, not to rent said theatre; and Whereas, it is highly desirable that said Amateur Choral Club be encouraged and indorsed in its efforts to secure attractions of the character men- tioned above on account of the artistic value thereof to the citizenship of Austin and we feel confident that the management of the Majestic Theatre, which stands for high glass entertainment, will contribute to said undertakings if the matter be presented to it, Therefore, BE IN RESOLVED BY THE CITY QUNCIT. OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That Mr. Herahal Stewart, Manager of the Southern Enterprises, be most urgently and respectfully requested to grant Mr. Jeffres, the local manager at Austin, the privilege of renting, at a reasonable rate, to the Amateur Choral Club the Majestic Theatre at Austin for the purpose of presenting one large musical attraction each season, and particularly that he permit this theatre to be used for the purpose of presenting the Pavlowa attraction next winter.
