    Barricades were authorized for San Gabriel and Leon Streets at Shoal Creek due to a dangerous bluff.
  • Early "Service Car" Licenses Approved:

    Multiple individuals received licenses to operate "service cars," which functioned as the city's early form of taxis or hired-car services.

1 ayor Pro tem Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, in Cause No. 20933 in the District Court of Travis County, in suit of the City of Austin vs. Unknown Owners, 1/8 interest in 33-1/3 acres of the Daniel J. Gilbert Survey was sold to the City of Austin for $20.88, being amount of taxes, interest, penalties and costs for 1899 and 1901 on said property; and WHEREAS, D. B. Gracy representing the said property known as the "Bunsen" interest, desires to pay said taxes, interests, costs and penalties amounting to the sum of $20.88; and WHEREAS, the said property is not now included in the limits of the city, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby authorized to receive said amount of $20.88 in full for taxes, interest, penalties and costs due on said property, taking credit for any interest that may have accrued since said sale, The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Pro tem Haynes, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Mayor Yett absent. The following monthly reports were read and ordered filed: Jas. H. Maxwell, Sealer of Weights and Measures; C. L. Woodward, Chief of the Fire Department, Nelliem. Hall, Secretary of the United Charities, and W. A. Alff, City Sexton. The Council then adjourned. REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Hornebu 1 Austin, Texas, January 19, 1922. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Bearight, 4; absent, Councilman Hyres, The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Councilman Haynes were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Eyres absent. Councilman Copeland nominated T. P. Robinson as special policeman to assist in the enforcement of traffic laws, Nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Haynes and Searight, 3; nayes, none. Councilman Eyres absent, Councilman Copeland present but not voting. Councilman Searight introduced the following resolution: A RESOLUTION ACCEPTING FROM W. E. DOZIER THE PAVEMENT, CURB AND GUTTERING ON THE FOLLOWING NAMED STREETS AND PORTIONS OF STREETS AND ALLEYS OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS, VIZ: 593 594 COLORADO STREET from the north line of West Eleventh Street to the south property line of Fourteenth Street; BRAZOS STREET from the north line of East Eleventh Street to where the north line of the alley extending east and west in Original City Blocks Nos. 160 and 161 intersect Brasos Street; WEST TENTH STREET from the west line of Colorado Street to the east line of Lavaca Street; WEST THIRTEENTH STREET from the east line of Lavaca Street to the west line of Colorado Street; EAST FIRST STREET on the south side thereof from the east line of Trinity Street to the west line of Neches Street; THE ALLEY abutting the east and south sides of the New State Land Office Building and the abutting property on the east and south sides of the New State Land Office Building, said alley being located in Original City Block No. 122; THE ALLEY abutting on the north line of the Capitol Grounds and property on the north and extending from Colorado Street to Brazos Street. - WHEREAS, by written contract of date the day of August, A. D. 1921, between The City of Austin and W. E. Dozier, the said W. E. Dozier obligated himself to construct and put down Uvalde Rock Asphalt Pavement and concrete curbs and gutters, in accordance with the specifications for said work, prepared by the City Engineer and therefore adopted by the City Council of the City of Austin on the following named streets and portions of streets and alleys of the said City of Austin, viz: COLORADO STREET from the north line of East Eleventh Street to where the north line of the alley extending east and west in Original City Block Nos. 160 and 161 intersect Brazos Street; WEST TENTH STREET from the west line of Colorado Street to the east line of Lavaca Street; WEST THIRTEENTH STREET from the east line of. Lavaca Street to the west line: of Colorado street; EAST FIRST STREET ON THE SOUTH SIDE THEREOF from the east line of Trinity Street to the west line of Neches Street; THE ALLEY ABUTTING the east and south sides of the New State Land Office Building and the abutting property on the east and south sides of the New State Land Office Building, said alley being located in Original City Blook No. 122; and THE ALLEY abutting on the north line of the State Capitol Grounds and property on the north and extending from Colorado Street to Brazos Street; and WHEREAS, the said W. E. Dozier has completed the paving and placing of said improvements on the above named streets and alleys and portions thereof and did on the 28th day of December, A. D. 1921, tender unto the City of Austin for its acceptance the said above mentioned street and alley improvements, and it appearing to the City Council of the City of Austin that said improvements have been made in conformity with said specifications and said contract, and the said City of Austin in fact having accepted said improvements on said date of December 28, 1921, 1 Now therefore, Be It Resolved by the City Council of the City of Austin: That the above described improvements on the above mentioned streets and alleys and portions of streets and alleys within the said City of Austin be and the same are hereby accepted by the said City of Austin as of date December 28, 1921. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Searight, 4, nayes, none, Councilman Eyres absent. Councilman Searight introduced the following resolution: KE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That, on account of the fact that there exists a high bluff abutting on Shoal Creek at the end of San Gabriel and Leon Streets in the City of Austin and such condition as same now exists is dangerous to the public, the Superintendent of streets and Public Improvements is hereby authorized to erect a barricade across the north end of each of said streets at a point near the cliff or bluff line of Shoal Creek, and at such points in said streets as may be designated by him. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Bearight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Eyres absent. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the City Treasurer is hereby instructed to close on his books Sanitary Sewer Earnings Fund and to open a new fund to be known as Sanitary Sewer Fund, and to transfer any overdraft charges now remaining against said Sanitary Sewer Earnings Fund to Sanitary Sewer Fund. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Eyres absent. The contract, covering fire alarm circuit, entered into between the City of Austin and the southwestern Bell Telephone Company was received and ordered filed, The applications of D. O. Patton to operate the following service cars were granted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Fyres absent. Councilman Searight introduced the following ordinance: AN ORDINANCE PRESCRIBING CHARGE FOR CONNECTION WITH THE SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM AND PRESCRIBING CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS FOR STOPPAGE IN HOUSE SEWERS. The ordinance was read the first time and Councilman Haynes moved that the rule be suspended and the ordinance be placed on its second reading. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Hyres absent. The ordinance was read the second time and Councilman Haynes moved that the rule be further suspended and the ordinance be placed on its third reading and final passage. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Byres absent, The ordinance was read the third time and Councilman Haynes moved that the or dinance do now finally pass.
