Austin Reduces Property Taxes and Utility Bills

  • Widespread Property Tax Reductions:

    Following protests, the city approved significant reductions to 1921 property valuations for numerous residents and businesses across many city blocks and outlots, including adjustments to both land and improvement values.
  • Lower Utility Rates for Out-of-City Customers:

    Water and light service rates for customers living beyond Austin's city limits were decreased from 200% to 150% of the in-city rate, effective March 20, 1922.
  • New Special Policeman Appointed:

    Charley Rowley was officially nominated and confirmed as a Special Policeman.

1 and Whereas, all of said work specified in said bids mentioned has been done by said B. M, Spears, according to the plans and specifications and to the satisfaction of the City Council, Now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the sum of Two Thousand Forty-two Dollars and Ninety-three Cents ($2,042.93) be and the same is hereby appropriated out of the Hospital Bonde Fund for the purpose of paying for the work above mentioned; and the City Clerk is hereby instructed to issue a warrant against said fund in favor of said B. M. Spears for said amount and in full payment for said work. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Pro Tem Haynes, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres and Sesright, 4; nayes, none, Mayor Yett absent. Upon the recommendation of R. E. Nitschke, Acting Chief of Police, Council man Copeland nominated Charley Rowley as Special Policeman. Nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Pro Tem Haynes, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Mayor Yett absent. Report of Sam D. Griffin read and ordered filed, The Council then recessed, Chief of Police, for the month of February was SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, March 18, 1922. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland and Eyres; 3, absent, Councilmen Haynes and Searight.
