24 REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: The Council was called to order by the Mayor. members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, absent, none. Austin, Texan, June 8, 1922. Roll call showed the following Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Councilman Copeland were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Upon the recommendation of the Safety Committee, Councilman Haynes moved that the application of G. Flury to erect electric signs at 600 and 703 Congress Avenue be granted Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. • Upon the recommendation of C. E. Leonard, City Engineer, W. E. Seaholm, City Electrician, Seaholm, City-Disctrictar, and Robert Rockwood, Fire Marshal, the Texas Radio Corporation was granted permission to erect a radio station on the top of the building situated at #206 East 5th Street in the City of Austin by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. A. J. Eilers and others, comprising a committee from the Chamber of Commerce, appeared before the Council and asked that the Council take advantage of the proposition of R. Niles Graham to widen West 6th Street at the point where the I&GN Railway bridge corsses same. Councilman Copeland nominated Wood Green as extra hoseman to serve as extra fireman while the regular men are taking their annual vacations. Nominations were confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen land, Eyres, Haynes, and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Copeland present but not voting. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, the City Council has been furnished with satisfactory evidence of the fact that the north parts of Lots 1 to 4, and the South parts of Lots 5 to 8, all in Block 46, of the City of Austin, was on and before January 1 1922, occupied and used exclusively for religious purpовев; Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: , That said property is hereby exempted from taxation for city purposes for the year 1922; and the City Assessor and Collector of Taxes is hereby authorized and instructed to strike such property from the tax rolls of the city. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none, Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, E. J. Palm has paid the taxes of 1921, amounting to $61.60 on the valuation of $2,900.00 placed by the Board of Equalization on part of Lot 32, Outlot 20, Division "D"; and WHEREAS, the City Council, on his protest, by resolution, reduced the valuation of said property to $1,220.00 and notice thereof given to the Assessor and Collector which, however, was overlooked, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the City Clerk be and he is hereby instructed to issue a warrant against the General Contingent Fund to said Palm for $34.76, amount of taxes overpaid ! and that the Assessor and Collector be authorized to correct the assessment on his roll for 1921. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The report of Miss Lola Fay Archibald, Dairy Inspector, for the month of May and a supplemental report for the month of June were read and ordered filed. The following monthly reports were read and ordered filed: Fred Sterzing, Assessor and Collector, Sam D. Griffin, Chief of Police, J. A. Warren, Bookkeeper Street Department, Jas. H. Maxwell, Sealer Weights and Measures, Robert Rockwood, Fire Marshal, W. R. Davis, Bookkeeper Sewer Department, M. R. Miller, Mechanic for Fire Department, and Dr. C. H. Brownlee, City Health Officer, were read and ordered filed. The following ordinance was read the second time, after having been laid over for one week: AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING, EMPOWERING AND INSTRUCTING THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN TO ENTER INTO A CONTRACT WITH STONER, GALLAGHER & GROOS, INC., OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, FOR THE PURPOSE OF INSTALLING A UNIT SYSTEM OF EQUALIZATION OF REAL ESTATE VALUES FOR THE USE OF THE CITY TAX ASSESSOR AND COL- LECTOR, BOARD OF EQUALIZATION AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, SUBSTANTIALLY TO THE EFFECT AND THE TERMS CONTAINED IN THIS ORDINANCE, AND MAKING AN APPROPRIATION. Councilman Copeland moved that the rule be suspended and the ordinance be placed on its third reading and final passage: Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Tyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The ordinance was read the third time and Councilman Copeland moved that the ordinance do now finally pass. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Copeland introduced the following ordinance: AN ORDINANCE PROHIBITING THE STANDING OF VEHICLES ENGAGED IN THE BUSINESS OF CARRYING PASSENGERS OR FREIGHT FOR HIRE UPON THE STREETS OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, WITH THE CERTAIN EXCEΡΤΙΟΝ ΝΑMED IN THIS ORDINANCE: REGULATING THE CONDUCT OF PERSONS IN CHARGE OF SUCH VEHICLES: AND PROVIDING A PENALTY. The ordinance was read the first time and laid over until the next regular meeting, by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The Council then recessed, SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, June 10,1922. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. The application of Patton Transfer Company to operate as a service car, Packard 523749 was granted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The resignation of Dr. C. H. Brownlee, City Health Officer, was read and Councilman Haynes moved that the resignation be accepted, effective July 1,1922, Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Fyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none.
