The following communication from the Board of Trustees of the Public Free Schools was read: To the Honorable Mayor and City Council, Austin, Tехав. Gentlemen: Austin, Texas, December 20, 1922, At a meeting of the Board of Trustees held this date it was determined to ask you to levy a tax of sixty cents on the one hundred dollar's worth of taxable property for the maintenance of the public schools for the year 1922-23. It is the earnest desire of the Board of Trustees not to ask any more money for the maintenance and support of the public schools than is absolutely necessary for their successful and economical operation, We have been informed by the superintendent of receipts and disbursements that the taxable values have been increased about two million dollars. This will give us an increase from local taxation of $12,000.00. The State, however, has reduced the per capita apportionment from $13.00 to $10.00, and the schools will receive this year $26,817.00 less than was received last year from State apportionment. This fact, together with the ever-increasing enrollment in the public schools and the necessity of adding new teachers each term, makes it necessary that we ask the Council to levy the maximum rate for the maintenance of the schools, viz, sixty cents on the one hundred dollars valuation of property. : Respectfully submitted, (Sgd) George M. Decherd, President, " Mrs. T. I. Minter, Secretary." "Austin, Texas, December 20, 1922, To the Honorable Mayor and City Council, Austin, Texas.
