The application of the E. W. Anderson Tire Company for permission to erect an open iron-clad shed in the rear of his place of business on East Sixth Street was granted upon the recommendation of the Safety Committee, by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres , Mayor Yett nominated Miss Annie Fuchs as municipal nurse of the City of Austin, term effective March 1, 1923. Nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Mayor Yett not voting. The Council then recessed. SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: AUSTIN, TEXAS, MARCH 14, 1923. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; absent, none. The following bids for furnishing election supplies were opened and read: Von Boeckmann-Jones Company; Morgan Printing Company; E. L. Steck & Company; and Tobins. Councilman Bearight moved that the bid of Tobins be accepted as the best bid. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none, The Council then adjourned. REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, March 15, 1923. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; absent, none. Councilman Eyres moved that the reading of the Minutes of the last meeting be suspended. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The petition of Geo. S. Dowell, Attorney for Petitioners of Seventh Ward, asking that a bridge be built over the creek at the corner of Red River and East 2nd Streets, was read and ordered filed, by the following vote: Ayes, 105 106 Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Judge Blakesly appeared and presented an affidavit of Mrs. H. A. Reilly, President of the Society of Ladies of Charity St. Vincent de Paul, asking that said society be relieved from payment of taxes on its home for poor and friendless infants for the year 1922, and that same be placed on the exemption list for the year 1923 and all future years. Councilman Haynes moved that same be referred to the City Attorney. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none, Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, under the Unit System a valuation of $800.00 was placed on the improvements on Lot 9, Block 9, Outlot 32/33, Division "B", Glenwood Addition, which according to sworn statement of the owner, Shelly H. Black, and personal examination of the Board of Equalization, is excessive, the improvements consisting of a sma11 three room house and should not have been assessed at over $600.00, which is more than two-thirds of the actual value, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby instructed to correct the assessment on his rolls for 1922 and to take credit for $200.00, amount of reduction The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, under the Unit System a valuation of $1,035.00 was placed on the improvements on Lot 7, Block 9, Outlot 32/33 Division "B", Glenwood Addition, assessed to Mack Blocker, which valuation is erroneous and excessive and should be reduced to $800.00, which is more than two-thirds the actual value of the improvements consisting of a small three room house, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That in order to properly equalize the assessment, the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby instructed to change the value to $800.00 on his rolls for 1922 and to take credit for amount of reduction. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, under the Unit System a valuation of $2,600.00 was placed on Lote 7,8,9 and 10, Outlot 8, Division "0" containing about three and one-half acres, which valuation in comparison with adjoining acreage is excessive and erroneous, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That in justice to Mrs. Marie Peckenius, the owner of said three and one-half acres, the Assessor and Collector is hereby instructed to correct the assessment on his rolls for 1922 and in order to equalize the valuation with adjoining acreage place the value of this property at $1,000.00 and take credit for $1,600.00, amount of reduction. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Gouncilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, the Unit System experts in valuing 60x86-2/3 feet of Outlot 51, ! Division "E", assessed by Mrs. Pauline Pouls and Phyllis Henry, placed the full value at $837.00 for taxes of 1922; and WHEREAS, in transcribing said value to the inventory form from which the Assessor and Collector compiles his rolls, the value was erroneously placed at $1,660.00 for assessment, when as a matter of fact, the correct value for assessment is $560.00, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby instructed to correct said error and permit Mrs. Henry to pay on a valuation of $560.00 on said lot and to take credit for amount of reduction. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Bearight, 5; nayes, none. The application of Fred Fischer to erect a gasoline storage tank and electric sign at his place of business at 1310 East 6th Street was granted upon the recommendation of the Safety Committee by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The application of A. Bassetti to erect an iron-clad shed in the rear of 616 East 6th Street was refused upon the recommendation of the Safety Committee. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Council- men Copeland, Eyres, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Searight introduced the following resolution: RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS AND PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS TO PURCHASE SUFFICIENT LAND FOR THE OPENING OF 40TH STREET THROUGH THE EXTREME EAST END OF HYDE PARK. WHEREAS, it has been brought out that a great inconvenience exists to the citizens living in Hyde Park and east of Hyde Park between 38th and 43rd Streets by there being no open streets through Hyde Park in said above described area, and further that said citizens are very desirous of some relief of existing conditions, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: Thet the Superintendent of Streets and Public Improvements be and he is hereby authorized to purchase the land necessary to open said 40th Street through Hyde Park to connect with Duval Street, said purchase price shall not exceed $400.00. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Copeland, Eyгes, Haynes and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The communication of D. A. Gregg was read and Councilman Eyres moved that same be referred to the City Attorney for his report back to the Council.
