178 REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, August 9. 1923. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 4; absent, Councilman Avery. Councilman Haynes moved that the reading of the Minutes of the last meeting be postponed until the next regular meeting. Motion prevailed by the fol- lowing vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Nolen Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Avery absent. The Council then adjourned until Friday at ten o'clock A. M. SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, August 10, 1923. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; absent, none. The application of J. E. Bowles to erect a gasoline filling station at the corner of East 14th and Red River Streets was read and Councilman Searight moved that same be granted as recommended by the Safety Committee. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none, The petition of A. H. Yarrington and other East 6th Street merchants, asking that a drinking fountain be established on East 6th Street near the corner of Trinity Street was read and referred to Councilman C. N. Avery Superintendent of the Water, Light and Power Department. The application of Billy Ebner to erect an electric sign was read and referred to the Safety Committee. The monthly reports of R. E. Nitschke, City Sexton, J. H. Rogers, City Marshal, and Miss Nellie M. Hall, Secretary United Charities, was read and ordered filed, Councilman Avery introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the salary of the Cashier of the Water, Light and Power Department be and the same is hereby increased from $170.00 per month to $200.00 per month, effective May lst, 1923, and the additional sum of $240.00 be and the same is hereby appropriated for said purpose out of the Earnings Fund of the Water, Light and Power Department for this fiscal year, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the item, as contained in the budget of the Water, Light and Power Department for the year 1923, "Salary of Cashier at $170.00 per month, $2,040.00", be and the same is hereby amended so as to hereafter read as follows: "Salary of Cashier at $170.00 per month from January 1st to May 1st, and $200.00 per month from May 1st to December 31st, 1923, $2,280.00", The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none.
