REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, November 8.1923. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight 5; absent, none, Councilman Avery moved that the reading of the Minutes of the last meeting be suspended until the next regular meeting. Motion prevailed by the following Vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The Council then recessed until 2:30 Ρ. Μ. AFTERNOON SESSION The petition of A. E. Sullivan and other residents of South Austin, asking that the City Council fill the ravine east of the 1200 block on South Congress Avenue was read and ordered filed, The petition of Tom J. White, Secretary of the Emancipation League, asking permission to use a part of East Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets from December 24th to 29th, inclusive, was read and Councilman Avery moved that the request be granted, same to be held under the supervision of the Police and Street Commissioners. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The committee report on the petition of Paul O. Simms Company requesting an amendment to the fire limits ordinance excluding from same Lots 7 and 8, Block 63 of the City of Austin located on East 7th and Sabine Streets, was read and Councilman Nolen moved that the whole of the north one-half of Block 63 be excluded. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The monthly reports of Mrs. R. C. Walker, Pure Food Inspector, and A. S. Anderson, Public Weigher, were read and ordered filed, The Council then recessed, SPECIAL MHETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: 1 Austin, Texas, November 14, 1923. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; absent, none: W. A. Pillow, A. F. Lamar and H. P. Hunnicutt, members of the Board of Equalization, appeared before the Council and presented the following report: 205 206 To the Honorable Mayor and City Council, Austin, Teхав, Gentlemen: "Austin, Texas, November 12, 1923. We, the Board of Equalization, appointed by your Honorable Body for the year 1923, beg leave to report that we have finished our duties of equalizing values of all real estate, improvements and personal property situated in the City of Austin as nearly as possible. We have undertaken to uphold the Unit System and have adhered to the figures placed on real estate and improvements, except in a very limited number of cases, in which a personal inspection convinced us that erroneous values had been set, or that a clerical mistake in calculation had been made, We have given close attention to the rendition of personal property; and in order to equalize values we have found it necessary to raise figures in a large number of instances, Respectfully submitted, BOARD OF EQUALIZATION, By (Sgd) W. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none, D. A. Gregg, Attorney for B. W. Somers and others, appeared before the Council and asked that some action be taken upon the ordinance granting them a franchise. Councilman Haynes moved that the ordinance as submitted by Judge Gregg be referred to the City Attorney for his report back to the City Council.
