SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, March 06, 1924. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; absent, none. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, the Board of Equalization in statement herewith attached calls attention to an error made by Miss Priscilla Buckley in the rendition of the improvements on her property 60x138 feet of Outlot 42, Division "E" for 1923, at a full valuation of $20,000.00 instead of two-thirds of that amount and recommend that the assessment be reduced to $13,333.33, as a matter of justice and equalization, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby instructed to correct his rolls accordingly and take credit for $6,666,66, amount of reduction in the valuation of said improvements. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The communications of the Big Lump & Texas Coal Company and the Carr Coal Company with reference to the price of coal, were read and ordered filed. The Council then adjourned. REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Joers Forneby City th Austin, Texas, March 6, 1924, The Council met with all members present. The Minutes of the last meetings were read and upon motion of Councilman Haynes were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. A committee composed of 1. E, Armstrong and others, residents of West 32nd Street, appeared before the Council and asked that certain street work be done. The communication of Will J. Digg, asking that the City repair a retaining wall on his property was read and action on same was deferred. Earl Simms, acting for the Paul O. Simus Company, submitted two propositions for incinerator sites. Councilman Searight moved that same be referred to Councilman Haynes. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Coun- cilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. 255 256 W. E. Dozier, Contractor, appeared before the Council and asked that the City advertise for bide for street work. The Counoil then recessed until 2:30 P. M. AFTERNOON SESSION The communication of N. A. Ladd, acting for the Austin Trades Council, asking permission to change the date of the Conn T. Kennedy Carnival Company Shows from March 31-April 5th, 1924, to April 7th-12th, 1924, inclusive. Permission was granted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Nolen nominated Los Evans as policeman to act as dog catcher. Nomination was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Nolen present but not voting. Co uno 11man Avery nominated J. O. Andrewartha as Master Plumber and Ben Howell as Journeyman Plumber to serve with the Board of Examiners, Nominations were confirmed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Avery present but not voting. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, the Board of Equalization, to whom was referred the protest of Mr.W.F. Gohlke, Treasurer, against the valuation placed by said Board on property of the Home Ice & Cold Storage Company for assessment of taxes for 1923, having carefully investigated same, recommend, per memoranda herewith attached, that the valuation of $15,000.00 placed by them on the machinery of said company be reduced to $12,900.00 as just and equitable, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby instructed to make the reduction on his rolls and take credit for $2100.00, amount of reduction. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none, Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, Mrs. Mary Gardner makes affidavit herewith that in her rendition of taxes of 1923 in the name of H. J. Gardner she included credits to the amount of $600.00, not knowing that she was entitled to credit for amounts she owed and that her indebtedness exceeded the amount of the credits rendered by her, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That in order to correct said erroneous assessment, the Assessor and Collector is hereby instructed to make the change on his rolls and take credit for the $600.00 erroneously rendered. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, the Board of Equalization, to whom was referred the protest of : Mr. W. F. Gohlke, Treasurer, against the valuation placed by the said Board on the old machinery of the Consumers Ice Company for assessment of taxes for 1923 having carefully examined said machinery, have recommended that on account of same being practically worn out, the valuation of $7000.00 placed by them should be reduced to $5000.00, as per rendition of the owners, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby instructed to make the change on his rolls and take credit for $2000.00, amount of reduction. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The monthly reports of Fred Sterzing, Assessor and Collector of Taxes, W. D. Walker, Dairy Inspector, A. S. Anderson, Public Weigher, Jas. H. Maxwell, Bealer Weights and Measures, and Anna R. Fuchs, Public Health Nurse, were read and ordered filed, The application of the Cargill Company to erect an electric sign was read and Councilman Avery moved that same be referred to the Safety Committee. Kotion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none, Bids of the Greenwood Company, Griffith Drug Company, and the Evans-Cox Drug Company for drugs for the City Hospital were opened and read and same were referred to Councilman Nolen to be taken up with the City Health Officer and reported ba ak to the Council. Hawley, Chief Engineer of the State Fire Insurance Department, and J. J. Timmons appeared before the Council in the matter of a building code for the City of Austin. Councilman Avery introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN; Section 1. That the Mayor be and he is hereby instructed to execute in behalf of the City of Austin, the certain contract hereinafter set out: "THE STATE OF TEXAS COUNTY OF TRAVIS. 1 THIS CONTRACT, made and entered into this day by and between the City of Austin, a municipal corporation, acting by W.
