REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, April 24,1924. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes and Searight, 4; absent, Councilman Nolen. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and upon motion of Councilman Haynes were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Nolen absent. The Auditor's report of a summary of warrants issued ugainst the several funds of the city was read and ordered filed. The report of J. H. Rogers, City Marshal, for the month of March was read and ordered filed. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That, in consideration of the statement of W. A. Pillow, member of the Board of Equalization for 1923, as to the valuation of $5000.00 placed on the stock of merchandise owned by Tom D. Smith and the recommendation that said valuation should be reduced to $3000.00, as per invoice sirce shown by Mr. Smith, and the fact that Mr. Smith had no notice of the raise made by the Board, the Assessor and Collector is hereby authorized to make the change on his roll for 1923 and to take credit for the $2000.00 reduction. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Counc i iman Nolen absent. The request of the Women's Athletic Association of the University of Texas for permission to close one and one-half blocks on University Avenue on Friday evening, April 25th, 1924, for the purpose of giving a block dance, was granted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes and Bearight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Nolen absent. Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the meeting today be adjourned out of respect to the memory of M. li. Shipe, one of Austin's greatest civic workers and prominent in the promotion of our present splendid commission charter, and also in the promotion of the building of the Dam, the building up of one of the handsomest sections of our Capital City, and other civic improvements; and BE IT FURTHER HESOLVED: That the City Council attend the funeral in a body. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor 291 292 Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes and Searight, 4; nayes, none, Councilman Holen absent. The Council then recessed. AFTERNOON SESSION The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; absent, none. The petition of Jim Lee, colored, for a position on the police force was read and Councilman Haynes moved that same be referred to Councilman Nolen. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The Council then adjourned. The Minutes of the last meetings were read and upon motion of Councilman Searight same were adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen and Searight, 5; nayes, none, Councilman Haynes introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, the records show that upon the statement of the Chairman of the Board of Equalization for 1922, the assessment of $2400.00 as the value of the stock of merchandise and store fixtures of A. W. Courtney was deemed unjust and erroneous and was reduced by resolution of the City Council to $1565.00; and WHEREAS, in the meantime the same stock and fixtures have been assessed for taxes of 1923 at a valuation of $2400.00, Therefore, upon the petition of Mr. Courtney and the statement that he had no notice of any change by the Board from the corrected assessment of $1565.00 for taxes of 1922, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the Assessor and Collector be and he is hereby authorized to correct the assessment of his 1923 roll to $1565.00, same as for 1922, and to take credit for the difference of $835.00.
