Austin Elects New Officials, Boosts Barton Springs

  • New City Council Members Declared:

    The results of the May 11th special election were officially certified, confirming Ben M. Barker, P. W. McFadden, Robert Mueller, V. H. Pannell, and D. C. Reed as the newly elected council members, with their terms beginning July 1st.
  • Barton Springs Gets Playground Upgrade:

    The Bricklayers Union No. 8 generously donated and installed a complete set of six new swings at Barton Springs, a gift gratefully accepted by the City to enhance the popular recreational area for children.
  • Urban Planning & Resident Relief:

    A new building line was officially established for the east side of Colorado Street between 7th and 8th Streets. The City also addressed individual citizen concerns, including remitting a $22.80 speeding fine and approving an $82.75 claim for property damages.

560 Colorado Street at right angles 37.5 feet and easterly to a point and the present building line on the Southeast corner of Eighth and Colorado Street intersection. THIRD: Thence measure from the above established center line of Colorado Street at right angles and Easterly 38.2 feet to a point and the present building line on the Northeast corner of Seventh and Colorado Street intersection. Thus establishing a straight line between the present buildings on the East side of Colorado Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets, and between said two points for the East line of Colorado Street. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The report of the Safety Committee upon the application of G. Flury to hang an electric sign at T. H. Williams Store was read and Councilman Avery moved that same be adopted as recommended by the Committee, Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The Council then adjourned. Homsby Bitzer REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, May 13, 1926. The Council met with the following members present: Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Bearight, 5; absent, none. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and Councilman Haynes moved that same be adopted as read. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The petition of Chas. A. Burkhart and other residents of 47th Street, Hyde Park, asking that 45th to 47th Streets be improved and made passable, was read and same was laid on the table. The communication of the Austin Air Service was read and laid on the table. Francis Fischer appeared before the Council and asked that drainage of his property in the 4500 block on East Avenue be made. The petition of G. M. Harris, asking for remission of fine for speeding assessed against him in the Corporation Court, was read and Councilman Nolen moved that said fine of $22.80 be remitted. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Avery presented the claim of L. Soderberg for damages to his property at 119 West (th Street, in the sum of $82.75, and Councilman Searight moved that Councilman Avery be authorized to pay same upon proper release. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. , The petition of T. C. Barbour and others, complaining of a dairy inside the city limits, was read and Councilman Avery moved that same be referred to the City Attorney for investigation, Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Communication of H. R. Hamilton offering to sell the city a plot of ground near the river in Tenth Ward for $250.00 was read and Councilman Avery moved that same be referred to Councilman Nolen, Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The petition of Flexume Corporation, Buffalo, New York, asking for permission to hang an electric sign was read and Councilman Avery moved that same be referred to the Safety Committee. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. J. O. Corwin appeared before the Council in behalf of W. E. Dozier and asked that the City Engineer revise his figures on the paving of East Fourth Street. Councilman Avery moved that the matter be referred to the Oity Engineer for his report back to the Council at its next regular meeting. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. The communication of Bricklayers Union No. 8 advising the Council of donation by it of playground equipment for Barton Springs was read and accepted with thanks by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none. Councilman Avery introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, Brick Layers Union No. 8, Austin, Texas, has presented to the City of Austin one complete set and erection at Barton Springs of six swings of the latest type of playground equipment, "In appreciation of the good work being done by making Barton Springs one of the most beautiful and pleasant family recreational resorts of this section and the high regard in which said Union holds said resort.!" Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE OITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That said gift is recognized as a splendid expression of generosity on the part of said Union and will add wonderfully to the pleasure of the children who frequent said resort, and is hereby accepted by the City Council with its cordial thanks and appreciation, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That a certified copy of this resolution be transmitted to the officers of said Union. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor Yett, Councilmen Avery, Haynes, Nolen, and Searight, 5; nayes, none, The monthly reports of J. N. Littlepage, City Marshal, were read and ordered filed. AFTERNOON SESSION Councilman Searight absent.
