A committee of residents on Duval Street again appeared before the Council in the matter of permanent paving for Duval Street from 26 to 35th Streets. As no agreement had been reached between this committee and the Street Car Company with reference to this paving, the Council advised the committee that the matter would again be deferred until the next regular meeting. City Manager Johnson laid before the Council letter from W. E. Babel, General Agent I&GN Railway Company, requesting that, in order to have the amount of clearance required by law for their spur track on East 4th Street, the Becker Lumber Company be permitted to construct a platform st feet wide instead of 10 feet wide on the south side of their warehouse on East 4th Street. The following letter from the City Engineer with reference to this request was then read: "Austin, Texas, June 23,1927. Mr. Adam R. Johnson, City Manager, Austin, Texas. Dear Sir: At the request of the Missouri Pacific Railway Company and Herman Becker, an Ordinance was passed permitting the Railway Company to construct a spur on Fourth Street between San Jacinto and Trinity Streets. Under this grant, the center line of this spur was to be 15.7 feet south of the north line of Fourth Street. They are now presenting a request that they be permitted to change their line to 17 feet south of the north line of Fourth Street and that the platform of the Becker building be cut back in such a manner that the sidewalk would only be & feet, whereas the established width of the sidewalk is 10 feet. I recommend that the City maintain this width of walk at 10 feet and that the Ordinance be amended so that the center line of the track will be 18t feet south of the north line of Fourth Street. This will permit the City to keep its improvements on the same line and will permit the Railway Company to put their track in so they will not be in conflict with the State law in regard to clearance space. Respectfully submitted, Orin E. Metaclfe, City Engineer."
