Austin Plans New Bridge, Denies Gas Station

REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, June 30, 1927. 135 The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 5; absent, none. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and Councilman Steck moved that same be adopted. Motion was seconded by Councilman Mueller and same prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 5; nays, none. The matter of permanent paving for Duval Street from 26 to 35th Streets was again brought before the Council by the Committee and Councilman Pannell moved that, as the committee of residents opposed to permanent paving could not be present, the matter be deferred to the next regular meeting. Motion was seconded by Councilman Steck and same prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 3; nays, Mayor McFadden and Councilman Mueller. Mayor McFadden moved owing to the nearness of same to a public school, as recommended by Safety19, moved that the request of David J. Pickle to erect a gasoline filling station at 1105 Rio Grande Street be not allowed. Motion was seconded by Councilman Reed and same prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 5; nays, none. Councilman Reed moved that the request of R. C. Walden to move his curb line back on to his parkway at his store building, No.3808 Speedway, be granted, provided same were done under the supervision of the City Engineer. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 5; nays, none. The petition of residents, asking that an electric light be placed at 21st and Pearl Streets, was referred to the City Manager for attention. City Manager Johnson submitted to the Council an estimate for the building of a bridge across Johnson Creek on Dam Boulevard, said estimate being in the amount of $14,973.38, of which amount the city's proportionate part will be $9,582.96, the Austin Street Railway's, $2,695.21, and the Missouri Pacific Railway's, $2,695.21 Councilman Reed moved that the City Manager be instructed to proceed with the building of said bridge. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 5; nays, none. City Manager Johnson laid before the Council the following letter from Orin E. Metcalfe, City Engineer: To the Members of the City Council and The City Lanager, "Austin, Texas, June 28, 1927. Austin, Texас. Gentlemen: The Southwest Bitulithic Company has completed the paving of 5th Street, between Lavaca and Guadalupe Streets; 1st Street, between. Trinity and Neches Streets and also Red River Street, between 13th and 14th Streets all in accordance with their contract. I have inspected same and hereby recommend formal acceptance of this work. Very truly yours, (Sgd) Orin E. Metcalfe, City Engineer. " 136 Mayor McFadden moved that the foregoing report be received and the recommendations with reference to said paving be adopted. Motion was seconded by Council- man Reed and same prevailed by the following vote: Ayce, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 5; naye, none. Councilman Reed moved that the Council recess, subject to call of the Mayor. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Pannell, Reed, and Steck, 5; nays, none, The Council then recessed. REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: App: Maden Mayor. Austin, Texas, July 7, 1927. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Reed, and Steck, 4; absent, Councilman Pannell. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and Councilman Mueller moved the adoption of same. Motion prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Reed and Steck, 4; absent, Councilman Pannell. The matter of paving Duval Street was again brought before the Council by the committees. Judge James A. King presented a petition, signed by a number of property owners opposed to the expensive paving, requesting the Council to pave said street with liquid asphalt or a topping of similar strength, flexibility and cost. C. W. Connerly presented a petition signed by a number of citizens living in the vicinity of Duval Street, indorsing the permanent paving of Duval Street amd also the removal of the street car tracks from said street and the substitution of a bus line therefor. The petitions were received and filed and Mayor McFadden moved that the matter of paving Duval Street be deferred. Motion was seconded by Councilman Mueller and same prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Mayor McFadden, Councilmen Mueller, Reed, and Steck, 4; nays, none, Councilman Pannell absent. Mayor McFadden laid before the Council the following resolution: WHEREAS, Lot 11, Survey 7, Abstract 697, of the Geo. 7. Spear League, in the City of Austin, owned by Wm. B. and Annie Baylor, was assessed for city taxes for the year 1926, at a valuation of $1450.00; and WHEREAS, it is shown to the satisfaction of the City Council that said property should have been assessed at $350.00; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the assessment for city taxes for the year 1926 on Lot 11, Survey 7, Abstract 697, Geo. 7. Spear League, City of Austin, be corrected so as to read $350.00, and the City Assessor & Collector of Taxes be hereby directed to change his roll accordingly and to take credit therefor. Councilman Reed zoved the adoption of the above resolution.
