REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: 419 Austin, Texas, August 18, 1932. The Council was called to order by the Mayor. Roll call showed the following members present: Councilman Gillis, Mayor MoFadden, Councilman Mueller, 3; absent, Councilmen Alford and Steck, 2. The Minutes of the last meeting were read and Counoilman Gillis moved the adoption of same as read. Motion was seconded by Councilman Mueller and same prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Councilman Gillis, Mayor MoFadden, Counoilman Mueller, 3; nays, none; Councilmen Alford and Steck absent, 2. Mrs. Sally Latham, 94 Red River Street, made an appeal to the Council for material aid, claiming that the charity organizations of the City had not given her sufficient assistance. The matter was taken under advisement for further consideration, after hearing reports on the case from Dr. Lee Edens, City Health Officer, W. E. Russell, Humane Officer, and Mrs. Eva Pressler, Head of the Charity and Welfare Department. Councilman G111is presented a petition signed by a number of citizens living in the vicinity of the artesian well being drilled on Blunn Greek in Travis Heights, asking that, on account of the noise created thereby, drilling operations at this well cease at 20:00 ofclock P. Kocach night. The matter was referred to the City Manager to negotiate with the Contractor for the granting of this request. A report of Orin E. Metcalfe, Oity Engineer, on the application of the Texas Publio Service Company for a permit to construct a regulator pit in Nueces Street between Second and Third Streets, was read, and the matter was referred back to the City Engineer to find out if said Company would agree to the placing of same at a location other than on a paved street. A petition by citizens and property owners on the South Side, asking that signal 1ights be placed at the intersection of South Congress Avenue and Riverside Drive in order to relieve the traffic menace at this point, was read. The matter was taken under advisement for a study of the situation with the Traffic Department, with a view to eliminating this hazard. The application of Ralph Moore, 1209 West 5th Street, for permit to operate as a taxicab a 1929 Ford, Model A, Tudor Sedan, Motor No. 2441379, License No. X 38-383, was read. Councilman Mueller moved that the application be granted. Motion was seconded by Councilman Gillis and same prevailed by the following votes Ayes, Councilman 011118, Mayor MoFadden, Counoilman Mueller, 3; naye, none; Councilmen Alford and Steck absent, 2. The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution: WHEREAS, charges have been preferred against Charlie Henry, who operates a taxicab under Oity License #53, said car being operated under State License #K34-610, in that said Charlie Henry, on to-wit, August 15, 1932, picked up a passenger at 1309 Concho Street at the time other passengers were riding in said taxicab; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: THAT a hearing on said matter be had by the City Council on Thursday, August 25,1932, at 10:00 olclock A. M., and that said Charlie Henry be given notice to appear before the City Council at said time to show cause why said City License should not be revoked. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Councilman Gillis, Mayor McFadden, Councilman Mueller, 3; nays, none; Councilmen Alford and Steck absent, 2. 420 The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution: WHEREAS, charges have been preferred against Brady Jackson, as driver, who operates , for E. L. Jackson, as owner, a taxicab under City License #104, said car being operated under State License #K35-372, in that said Brady Jackson on to-wit, August 10, 1932, carried a passenger in said taxicab who did not pay a fare; and also that said driver did not have on a chauffer's cap at said time; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: THAT a hearing on said matter be had by the City Council on Thursday, August 25, 1932, at 10:00 o'clock A. M., and that said E. L. Jackson be given notice to appear before the City Council at said time to show cause why said City License should not be revoked. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Councilman Gillis, Mayor HoFadden, Councilman Mueller, 3; nays, none; Councilmen Alford and Steck absent, 2. The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution: WHEREAS, at a meeting held July 19, 1932, the Park Board of the City of Austin passed a motion recommending the cancellation of the purchase of two proposed tracts of land along Shoal Creek, one for the sum of $10,000.00 from Judge and Mrs. Hamilton, and the other for the sum of $9,653.00 from Dr. Goodal Wooten; and WHEREAS, the City Council, according to resolutions passed by them, authorised the purchase of said properties subject to the approval of the title by the City Attorney; and WHEREAS, said title was not approved; and WHEREAS, the City Council set aside the sum of $19,653.00 out of the Parks and Playgrounds Bond Fund for the purchase of said land, according to resolutions recorded in the City Clerk's Minute Book No. 13, Pages 131 and 132; and WHEREAS, the City Council has considered the report on the title of said lands and the recommendation of the Park Board according to its motion passed July 19, 1932; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: THAT the offer to purchase said properties is hereby rescinded and that the apprоpriation of $19,653.00 heretofore set aside for said purpose is hereby rescinded. The above resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Councilman G1111s, Mayor HoFadden, Councilman Mueller, 3; nays, none; Councilmen Alford and Steck absent, 2. Edwin 0. Kreisle, Architect, submitted sketches of plans for remodelling the West Austin Fire Station, at an estimated cost of from $6500.00 to $7000.00; the North Austin Fire Station, at an estimated cost of $8500.00; and the Fire Station at No. 1111 East First Street, at an estimated cost of $7500.00. No further business coming before the Council, Councilman Mueller moved to recess, subject to call of the Mayor. Motion was seconded by Councilman Gillis, and same prevailed by the following vote: Ayes, Councilman Gillis, Mayor MoFadden, Councilman Mueller, 3; nays, none; Councilmen Alford and Steck absent, 2.
