There being no further business, Councilman Gillis moved to recess, subject to oall of the Mayor. The motion was seconded by Councilman Alford and carried by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, Mayor Miller, and Councilman Wolf, 5; nays, none. Mayor REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: 243 The Council was called to order by the Mayor. present: Councilmen Alford, Gillis, Mayor Miller, 3; Wolf, 2. Austin, Texas, November 2, 1933. Roll call showed the following members absent, Councilmen Bartholomew and The Minutes of the last regular meeting were read and Councilman Gillis moved the adoption of same as read. The motion was seconded by Councilman Alford and carried by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Gillis, Mayor Miller, 3; naye, none; Councilmen Bartholomew and Wolf absent, 2. A committee from Travis Post No. 76, American Legion, came before the Council and asked for a permit to hold a "Walkathon" contest in this City under the auspicies of their organization. Councilman Gillis moved that the permit be granted. The motion was seconded by Councilman Alford and carried by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Gillis, and Mayor Miller, 3; nays, none; Councilmen Bartholomew and Wolf absent, 2. The Committee also asked that the week beginning November 5th to 11th be designated as "American Legion Week" in order to assist their organisation in its membership drive. The Mayor then introduced the following resolutions WHEREAS, This year Armistice Day has peculiar significance, because it not only rededicates the sacrifices that the American soldiers made in the World War but it also consecrates the unstinted efforts of the American people in their support of the President in the war upon the Depression; and WHEREAS, Travis Post No. 76, American Legion, has set aside the week beginning November 5th to 11th as membership week; Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE OITY OF AUSTIN: THAT, for the reasons stated above, it is the judgment of the City Council that the week beginning November 5th to 11th should be set apart as "American Legion Week", and we take this opportunity to call upon all ex-service men who served their country during the time of the World War and are eligible to become members of the American Legion to | 244 associate themselves with that organization in order to assist in carrying out the principles upon which the American Legion is founded; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: THAT it is the judgment of the City Council, concurred in by the City Manager, that all city employees should cease from their labors on Armistice Day and that only such work of the City Government as is necessary for the health and protection of the public should be continued through that day. The resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Gillis, Mayor Miller, 3; nays, none; Councilmen Bartholomew and Wolf absent, 2. 1933: The following firme submitted bids for auditing the books of the City for the year Carter, Rhodes and MoAnally. F. G. Rogers Company T. B. Trotter Company George Hoehn After a discussion of the bide presented, the Council took the matter under further consideration. A petition signed by the wholesale produce jobbers, growers, and dealers of the City, asking for the appointment of Hugh Turner äs special officer to inspect transient trucks, was read and referred to the City Manager for attention. The Mayor laid before the Council the following resolution: WHEREAS, The City of Austin proposes the following work relief project, for which application will be made to the Texas Rehabilitation and Relief Commission for the cost of labor on same, to-wit: Street Grading; and WHEREAS, It is estimated that the following tools, equipment and transportation fac11ities will be necessary in the prosecution of said project, to-wit: Forty picks, forty shovels, two water buckets, and six dippers; therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: THAT in consideration of the Texas Rehabilitation and Relief Commission, through its Travis County Board of Welfare and Employment, furnishing the funds sufficient to pay the cost of labor, including truck drivers, employed on said project, the City of Austin will supply free of cost to the Travis County Board of Welfare and Employment: (1) All the materials necessary for the successful completion of said project; (2) The use, free of cost to said County Board of Welfare and Employment, all the tools, equipment and transportation facilities that may be necessary for the successful completion of the project; and (3) Whatever technical supervisory personnel is necessary to the successful completion of the project, and hereby designates such personnel as follows: J. E. Motheral, City Engineer. The resolution was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Gillis, and Mayor Miller, 3; naye, none; Councilmen Bartholomew and Wolf absent, 2. A committee from the Family Service Society submitted a proposal for the City to take over the activities of their organization in order that same may continue to function, as funds from the Community Ohest were no longer available for the financing of their work. The Council rejected their proposal, but advised the Committee that the City might consider making a contribution to their organization for the coming year in conjunction with other welfare work. 1
