SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, April 18, 1939. The City Council convened in special session, at the regular meeting place in the City Hall, on Tuesday, April 18, 1939, at 4:15 P. M., with Mayor Tom Miller presiding. Roll call showed the following members present: Councilmen Chas.F.Alford, C. M. Bartholomew, Simon Gillis, and Mayor Tom Miller; absent, Councilman Oswald G. Wolf. It was moved by Councilman Bartholomew that the resignation of Al Ehrlich as Clerk of the Corporation Court be accepted, to become effective May 1 next. The motion was seconded by Councilman Gillis, and was carried by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, Mayor Miller; naya, none; Councilman Wolf absent. It was moved by Councilman Bartholomew that Fred Griffith be appointed as temporary deputy Clerk of the Corporation Court to serve until May 1 next, at which time he would be appointed as Clerk of the Corporation Court. The motion was seconded by Councilman Alford, and was carried by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller; nays, none; Councilman Wolf absent. Mayor Miller advised the Council that Councilman Wolf had stated that he would be unable to attend the meeting, but that he wanted to go on record as recommending Fred Griffith for the position of Clerk of the Corporation Court. It was moved by Councilman Bartholomew that Judge D. H. Doom be appointed to serve as substitute Judge of the Corporation Court during the illness of Judge J. W. Maxwell. The motion was seconded by Councilman Gillis, and was carried by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller; nays, none; Councilman Wolf absent. Walter Wupperman appeared before the Council relative to a building permit for a cat and dog hospital at 34th and San Gabriel Streets, and he was advised that permit for same was being withheld on account of the large number of protests from surrounding property owners. Mayor Miller then submitted an offer for the purchase of the foregoing property, fronting 58 feet on 34th Street, by the City of Austin, at a consideration of $1760, which offer was accepted by the said Walter Wupperman. It was then moved and seconded that the City Manager be authorized to purchase this property at the consideration stated, and that the City Attorney be directed to prepare the necessary papers. The motion was carried by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller; naye, none; Councilman Wolf absent. It was agreed by the members of the City Council present, but no formal action being taken thereon, that the firm of Maxwell & Cox, Accountante, be employed to make continuous audits from month to month of the City's books, at the stipulated price of $1500 per year.
