358 SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Texas, August 22, 1941 The City Council convened in special session in the Council Chamber at the Municipal Building on Friday, August 22, 1941, at 5 P. M., with Mayor Tom Miller presiding. Roll call showed the following members presents Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller; absent Councilman Wolf. The Mayor stated that the meeting was called for the purpose of hearing J. Bascom Giles regarding the purchase by the City of Austin of 567 of an acre of land owned by said J. Bascom Giles and wife, Effie Dean Giles. After a lengthy discussion of the matter during which the Mayor offered to pay Mr. Giles and wife $300.00 for the .567 of an acre of land in lieu of the offer of $250.00 made for this amount of land, Mr. Giles stated that he could not accept the offer and that he would rather give the land to the City than take less than $1,000.00 for this land. The Council agreed to accept Mr. Giles offer of the gift of the .567 of an acre of land and instructed the City Attorney to prepare a deed of gift covering said land to be signed by J. Bascome Giles and wife, Effie Dean Giles, conveying same to the City of Austin. A vote taken showed the following ayes, Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller, nays, none; Councilman Wolf absent. Mr. Giles requested some assurance from the City Council as to the extension of utilities, including water lines, to his property facing on East Avenue, but the City Council declined to give any definite assurance but requested Mr. Seaholm, Acting Oity Manager, and Superintendent of City Utilities, to exhibit to Mr. Giles any plans for water line extensions already formulated by the Utility Department. : Upon motion, seconded and carried, the meeting was recessed at 7:15 P.
