212 REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL: Austin, Towns, May 06, 1943 The City Council convened in Remiler Session, at the regular meeting place in the Council Chomber at the Municipal Building, on Thursday, May 6, 1943, at 10:45 A. M., 11th Mayor Tom Miller presidin. Roll coll showed the following members precents Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Meyor Miller: absent, Councilman Wolf. There were present alaat Walter E. Seaholm, Acting City Manager; J. M. Patterson, Jr., Acting City Attorney: J. E. Motherol, City Engineer; and R. D. Thorp, Chief of Police. The minutes of the Regular Meeting of April 29, 1943, were rend, and upon motion of Councilman Alford, were adopted as rend, by the following vote: "Ayes," Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller; "naya," none; Councilman Wolf absent. Louis Bonugli came before the Council and protested against the lowering of the street grade adjacent to his property at the corner of Spence and San Marcos Streets in connection with certain street improvements under construction by the Engineering Department. Following a report by the Engineering Depertment on the matter, no further action was taken. The application of H. J. Hashem for a wine and beer permit for the Brazos Bar, 200 East 6th Street, duly approved by the Acting City Manager, et al., was submitted. Councilman Alford moved that the permit be granted. The motion corried by the following vote: "ayes," Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller: "naya," none; Councilman Wolf absent. The application of Richard Jackson for a beer permit for the Cottage Inn, 2237 East 7th Street, duly approved by the Acting City Manager, et al., was submitted. Councilman Gillis moved that the permit be granted, conditioned on applicant's obtaining a State license. The motion corried by the following vote: "ayes," Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller; "nays," none; Councilman Wolf absent. The following application for a license to operate a private boat under Federal License No. 23490, was submitted: Name and Address of Applicant Gardner, J. Harris 2418 Jarratt Avenue Description of Bont Lyman, Outboard, 1940 Model, Johnson, 5-passenger Councilmen Bartholomew moved that the license be granted. The application of Lightsey Cab Company, 112 Bort 7th Street, for license to operite as a toxicoba Chevrolet Sedan, 1940 Model, Engine No. 3169020, Stete Licences, 1942, No. 1196-781; 1943, FN-2774, duly approved by the Acting City Monocer, et al., won submitted. Councilmen Alford moved that the license be granted, subject to the remiletions of the Office of Defense Transportation, and the concellation of existing permit No. 8 held by Joe Hobby. The poplicetion of HERBERT LEE OLOVER, 2301 Ent 17th Street, for tovicob driver pomit, duly approved by the Acting City Manerer, et al., or mubmitted. 11m Pertholome moved that the permit be fronted. The motion carried by the following vote: "nye"," Councilmen Alford, Pertholomew, Gillis, and Mayor Miller: "nove," none; Councilmen Wolf bent. A committee from the Chamber of Commerce, composed of Menure, W. E. Long, Arch 7. Adem", and P. M. Totland, come before the Council to offer their services in the matter of providing benches lon Brazos Street adjacent to the Bowen Bus Station for the convenience of molliorn patronizing said station; and in the matter of procuring shuttle train service to Comm Swift. The committee vere odvired that the benches in question were being installed, and that in effort was being made to secure the shuttle train. The request of Travis Post #76, American Legion, submitted by J. E. McClrin, for use of Zilker Pork for their July Fourth celebration, in the ovent anid orwanization decides to une, was granted. The Acting City Attorney was instructed to prepare on amendment to the ordinance requiring separate compartments on street care for whites and negroes so as to include busses.
