CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS 237 MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Regular Meeting March 01, 1944 10:45 Α. Μ. Council Chamber, City Hall The meeting was called to order, with Mayor Miller presiding. Roll call Present: Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, Mayor Miller Absent : Councilman Wolf 1 - 4 Present also: Walter E. Seaholm, Acting City Manager; J.E.Mo theral, City Engineer; J. M. Patterson, Jr., Acting City Attorney; and R.D. Thorp, Chief of Police. Thursday being a legal holiday, the meeting was held on Wednesday preceding. Upon motion of Councilman Alford, the reading of the minutes was dispensed with. The application of GEORGE KNOX, colored, 1021 East 11th Street, for a license to operate as a taxicab a 4-door Ford De luxe Sedan, 1938 Model, Motor No. 4448438, State License (1942) No. N09-599, State License (1944) No. FE-8882, duly approved by the Acting City Manager, to replace Taxicab Permit No. 84 cancelled by Arthur Patton, was submitted. Councilman Alford moved that the license be granted. The motion carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, Mayor Miller Noes: None Absent: Councilman Wolf The application of JOE EDWARD COOK, 645 Tillery Street, for a taxicab driver's permit, duly approved by the Acting City Manager, was submitted. Councilman Bartholomew moved that the permit be granted. A petition, signed by a large number of citizens, asking that the bus line be extended to Harvey Street and 19th Street, was received. The matter was referred to the Acting City Manager and the Austin Transit Company for consideration. The Mayor submitted to the Council for consideration his proposal that, to further the child welfare program, the City build a recreation center for the youth on vacant land owned by the City adjacent to the Fish Hatchery on Haskell Street, at an approximate cost of from Twentyfive Thousand Dollars ($25,000.00) to Thirty Thousand Dollars ($30,000.00). The matter was taken under advisement. The Mayor brought to the attention of the Council the hazard existing by reason of open storm sewer inlets. The City Engineer then reported on the work that was being done at the present to remedy the situation, and was instructed to proceed with such work as fast as possible. A public hearing on the proposal of the National Housing Agency to sponsor the building of one hundred new houses primarily to house war workers was called for Tuesday, March 7, at 8:00 P. M. The Acting City Manager submitted his recommendation to the Council that the contract with COX & SHEFFELD for auditing the City's books be renewed for the year 1944, at the stipulated sum of Fifteen Hundred Dollars ($1500.00). Councilman Bartholomew moved that the recommendation of the Acting City Manager be approved. The motion carried by the following vote: Councilmen Alford, Bartholomew, Gillis, Mayor Miller Ayes : Noes : None Absent: Councilman Wolf The Acting City Manager submitted to the Council an offer by the 24 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS United States Credit Bureau for the collection of delinquent hospital accounts on a 25% basis if the addresses of delinquents are known, or on a 50% basis if not known. It was the sense of the Council that the offer be rejected, but that the Acting City Manager submit a statement of such accounts for further consideration. There being no further business, upon motion, seconded and carried, the meeting was recessed at 12:10 P. M., subject to call of the Mayor.
