5 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Recessed Meeting July 6,1944 8:00 P. M. Council Chamber, City Hall 526 The meeting was called to order, with Mayor Miller presiding. Roll call Present: Councilmen Bartholomew, Gillis, Mayor Miller Absent : Councilmen Alford and Wolf 2 - -3 Present also: Walter E. Seaholm, Acting City Manager; J. M.Patterson, Jr., Acting City Attorney; and Members of the School Board. The Mayor announced that, pursuant to public notice given, the purpose of the meeting was to publicly discuss the proposal of the School Board that the City appropriate the sum of SEVENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS ($70,000.00) out of the Water and Light Fund, or other funds not otherwise appropriated, to augment the School Fund, and specifically to provide for a raise of approximately 73% in the teachers' salaries; the City, in return, to take over the recreational facilities of the schools for the night activities. There being no taxpayer or other interested citizen present to be heard on the matter, the Acting City Attorney was then instructed to draw the necessary resolution for adoption at the next regular meeting appropriating the sum of SEVENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS ($70,000.00), payable to the School Fund in two equal installments of THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($35,000.00) each, on September 1, 1944, and on February 1, 1945. The School Board then expressed its appreciation to the City Council for the splendid cooperation given it by the Council in this, as well as all other matters pertaining to the welfare of the public schools.
