394 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS 394 MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Special Meeting July 12, 1949 11:45 Α.Μ. Council Chamber, City Hall The meeting was called to order with Mayor Glass presiding. Roll Call: Present: Councilmen Johnson, Long, MacCorkle, Mayor Glass Absent: Councilman Drake Present also: Guiton Morgan, City Manager; Trueman E. O'Quinn, City Attorney. Mayor Glass stated the purpose of this meeting was to adopt a resolution expressing sorrow of the passing of our Governor and extending sympathy to the members of his family. Councilman Johnson offered the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the City Council, sitting in special session called for the purpose and representing the people of Austin, observe with sorrow the untimely passing of the Honorable Beauford H. Jester, Governor of the State of Texas, who in devoted and unselfish service of the people of Texas as their chief executive and faithful leader was taken by death on the 11th day of July, 1949; That the City Council express to Mrs. Beauford H. Jester, his wife, to Mrs. George T. Jester, his mother, and to his children, Barbara Jester Burris, Joan Jester, and Beauford Jester, Jr., and to other members of his family the deep sympathies of all the citizens of the City of Austin and of the City Council, and instruct the City Clerk to send copies of this resolution to the named members of Governor Jester's family, and that when the City Council adjourns this special meeting today, this act be done with respect for the memory of Governor Jester, the first citizen of Texas and the first citizen of Austin by loving adoption of its people. 3.75 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS 395 Which motion carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Johnson, Long, MacCorkle, Mayor Glass Noes: None Absent: Councilman Drake There being no further business, the Council adjourned in memory of Governor Jester.
