The Austin Chapter, American Gold Star Mothers, presented the city with U.S. and Texas flags. These flags were provided by prominent figures Senator Lyndon Johnson and Governor Allen Shivers.Request for Meeting Prayers:
The council decided to ask the Ministerial Alliance to provide a pastor to open future city council meetings with a prayer.

418 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS 418 MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Special Meeting May 19, 1953 10:00 Α.Μ. Council Chamber, City Hall The meeting was called to order with Mayor Drake presiding. Roll call: Present: Councilmen Johnson, Long, MacCorkle, White, Mayor Drake Absent: None Invocation was given by REV. CARLYLE MARNEY, Pastor, First Baptist Church. The Minutes of the meetings of May 13, 1953, and May 14, 1953, were unanimously approved by the Council. The Mayor announced this special meeting of the Council was called for the purpose of administering the oath of office to council members elected April 4, 1953, and for organizing the Council for the new term, and for electing certain appointive officers. The Oath of Office as administered by JUDGE JACK ROBERTS of the 126th District Court, as follows: THE STATE OF TEXAS COUNTY OF TRAVIS i I, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the duties of the office of Councilman of the City of Austin, Travis County, Texas, and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and & this State; and I furthermore solemnly swear that I have not directly or indirectly paid, offered, or promised to pay, contributed, nor promised to contribute, any money, or valuable thing, or promised any public office or employment, as a reward for the giving or withholding a vote at the election at which I was elected. Thompson and Ben White, on this the 19th day of May, 1953. (S) JACK ROBERTS Judge, 126th District Court Travis County, Texas Thereupon Mayor Drake declared MRS. STUART (EMMA) LONG, C. A. MCADEN, WESLEY PEARSON, TED R. THOMPSON, and BEN WHITE to be the duly elected and installed City Council for the ensuing two years. The election of a mayor and mayor pro-tem was the next order of business. Mayor Drake acted as Moderator and called for nominations for the office of Mayor. Councilman Pearson nominated C. A. McADEN as Mayor. There being no other nominations, the roll was called on the nomination of C. A. MCADEN and the same was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Pearson, Thompson, White Noes: None Present but not voting: Mayor McAden Former Mayor Drake then declared C. A. MCADEN to be the duly elected Mayor for the ensuing two years. Mayor McAden then took the Chair, and in a brief address expressed his appreciation to the Council. Councilman Thompson nominated Councilman Pearson as Mayor Pro-tem. There being no other nominations, the roll was called on the nomination of Councilman PEARSON and the same was confirmed by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Thompson, White, Mayor McAden Noes: None Present but not voting: Councilman Pearson. The Austin Chapter, American Gold Star Mothers, presented the United States and Texas Flags to the City Council in a brief ceremony. The spokesmen for the Chapter were MRS. FRED BEEMAN and MRS. LOIS FUGLER. The flags were given by SENATOR LYNDON JOHNSON and GOVERNOR ALLEN SHIVERS to the Chapter for this presentation. The Mayor accepted with thanks in behalf of the people of Austin. Members of the families of the incoming Council, and of the out-going Council were recognized. 420 420 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS COUNCILMAN WHITE expressed his thanks to the Council for postponing this meeting from May 15th on account of the death in his family. He expressed his pleasure in serving for the past two years with MAYOR DRAKE and COUNCILMEN JOHNSON and MacCORKLE. COUNCILMAN LONG expressed pleasure in serving for the past four years and for the opportunity of serving another two years. Councilman Long then moved that the MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE be asked to send the Council a pastor to open their meetings with a prayer. The motion, seconded by Councilman Thompson, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Pearson, Thompson, White, Mayor McAden Noes: None MR. E. B. MOODY, as a token of appreciation and to wish them well, presented the veteran members of the Council a gift. Gifts in appreciation of services well done were presented to MR. JOHNSON, DR. MacCORKLE, and MAYOR DRAKE, By Mr. Jess Allman, Woodrow Patterson, and A. N. McCallum respectively. Statements of pleasure of serving on the Council and expressions of good will to the new Council were made by Mr. Johnson, Dr. MacCorkle, and Mayor Drake. Former MAYOR TAYLOR GLASS commended the work of Mr. Johnson, Dr. MacCorkle, and former Mayor Drake they had performed during their terms serving on the Council. MAYOR MCADEN recognized MR. PAT ADLEMAN, his campaign manager. MR. M. H. CROCKETT thanked the members who were leaving the Council for their kindness to him during the past years, and wished the new Council success in their work. Councilman Long moved that the meeting adjourn, subject to the call of the Mayor.
