CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS 204 204 NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: Notice is hereby given that a Special Meeting of the City Council of the City of Austin will be held on the 8th day of April, 1957, at the Municipal Building, Eighth and Colorado, in Austin, Texas, at 11:00 A.M. for the purpose of canvassing the votes of a General Election of Councilmen, held on the 6th day of April, 1957. Council Chamber, City Hall The meeting was called to order with Mayor Miller presiding. Roll call: Present: Councilmen Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Absent: Councilman Long The Mayor announced that this meeting was called for the purpose of canvassing the votes of a General Election of Councilmen, held on the 6th day of April, 1957. Councilman Long was absent due to illness in her family. The Council appointed Councilman Palmer to initial the returns as they were canvassed by the members. The Council canvassed the returns. Councilman White offered the following resolution and moved its adoption: (RESOLUTION) WHEREAS, by virtue of an election held in the City of Austin, Texas, on the 6th day of April, 1957, for the purpose of electing five Councilmen, the official returns from the election officials and the canvass thereof by the City Council show that there were cast at said election 6,425 votes; and, WHEREAS, said returns, and the canvass thereof, also show that the following named persons severally received the total votes set opposite their names, respectively, to wit: Mrs. Stuart (Emma) Long Councilman, Place No. 1 Councilman, Place No. 2 Vernon Cook Ben White Councilman, Place No. 3 Tom Miller Received 5,759 Received 2,598 Received 3,768. Received 6,021 Councilman, Place No. 4 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Lester E. Palmer Received 6,092 Councilman, Place No. 5 Gerald Knape Wesley Pearson Received 1,898 Received 4,400 TOTAL vote cast at election 6,425; and, 206 WHEREAS, it appears that Mrs. Stuart (Emma) Long received the highest number of votes for Councilman, Place No. 1, Ben White received the highest number of votes for Councilman, Place No. 2, Tom Miller received the highest number of votes for Councilman, Place No. 3, Lester E. Palmer received the highest number of votes for Councilman, Place No. 4, and Wesley Pearson received the highest number of votes for Councilman, Place No. 5; Now, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That, in accordance with said returns, as received and canvassed, the following named persons are hereby declared duly elected and authorized to qualify for the position of Councilman for the City of Austin, for the term of two years beginning May 15, 1957: Place No. 1 - Mrs. Stuart (Emma) Long Place No. 2 Ben White Place No. 3 Tom Miller Place No. 4 Lester E. Palmer Place No. 5 Wesley Pearson The motion, seconded by Councilman Palmer, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Noes: None Absent: Councilman Long There being no further business the Council adjourned at noon, subject to the call of the Mayor.
