- CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Special Meeting May 15, 1957 10:00 Α.Μ. Council Chamber, City Hall 281 287 The meeting was called to order with Mayor Miller presiding. Roll call: Present: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Absent: None Present also: W. T. Williams, Jr., City Manager; Doren R. Eskew, City Attorney; Reuben Rountree, Jr., Director of Public Works. Invocation was delivered by DR. J. J. SEABROOK, President Huston Tillotson. The Oath of Office was administered by JUDGE J. HARRIS GARDNER, 53rd District Court, as follows: THE STATE OF TEXAS ( COUNTY OF TRAVIS : I, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the duties of the office of Councilman of the City of Austin, Travis County, State of Texas, and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this State; and I furthermore solemnly swear that I have not directly nor indirectly paid, offered, or promised to pay, contributed, nor promised to contribute, any money, or valuable thing, or promised any public office or employment, as a reward for the giving or withholding a vote at the election at which I was elected. (Sgd) J. Harris Gardner Judge, 53rd District Court Travis County, Texas Mayor Miller recognized Mr. DICK MATHIAS, Chamber of Commerce; MR. STUART LONG, and JEFF LONG, and members of the administrative staff. MR. EUGENE BARTHOLOMEW was present and praised the Council stating that the people were proud of the Council and of the growth of the City; and pledged the support of the people through the coming term. JUDGE GARDNER stated one of the greatest assets the city had was the constuctive planning that comes from the members of this Council, and that everyone in the community owed a debt of gratitude to the Council. He wished the Council a very successful tenure. The nomination was Councilman White nominated TOM MILLER as Mayor. seconded by Councilman Long, and carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White Noes: None Present but not voting: Mayor Miller Councilman Palmer nominated WESLEY PEARSON as Mayor Pro-tem. The nomination was seconded by Councilman White, and carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Palmer, White, Mayor Miller Noes: None Present but not voting: Councilman Pearson Councilman White moved that MR. W. T. WILLIAMS, JR. be reappointed City Manager. The motion, seconded by Councilman Long, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Noes: None Councilman Pearson moved that MRS. ELSIE WOOSLEY be reappointed City Clerk and MRS. GRACE MONROE be reappointed Deputy City Clerk. The motion, seconded by Councilman Long, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Noes: None Councilman White moved that MR. PAT DOUGHERTY be reappointed as Judge of the Corporation Court. The motion, seconded by Councilman Pearson, carried by the following vote: - CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Ayes: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White Mayor Miller Noes: None 289 289 Councilman Pearson moved that MR. W. A. WILLIAMSON be reappointed Clerk of the Corporation Court; MR. VERNIE SMITH and MISS ANN BUTLER be reappointed Deputy Clerks of the Corporation Court. The motion, seconded by Councilman White, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Noes: None Councilman Long moved that DR. BEN PRIMER be reappointed Health Officer.
