  • Ben White Boulevard Established:

    A new major thoroughfare, previously known as the "South Belt Loop," was officially named Ben White Boulevard, honoring a councilman who humbly declined having South First Street named after him.

4405 405 CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Regular Meeting June 19, 1958 10:00 Α.Μ. Council Chamber, City Hall The meeting was called to order with Mayor Miller presiding. Roll call: Present: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Absent: None Present also: Reuben Rountree, Jr., Acting City Manager; Doren R. Eskew, City Attorney. Invocation was delivered by REV. RILEY EUBANK, Pastor, Woodlawn Baptist Church, 4600 Manchaca Road. Councilman White moved that the Minutes of the Regular Meeting of June 12th, and of Special Meetings of March 24th, 25th, 31st, and of April 1st, be approved. The motion, seconded by Councilman Pearson, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Long, Palmer, Pearson, White, Mayor Miller Noes: None MRS. FRANK G. RESNESHEK, representing a group present and senior citizens over 65 years of age, asked the Council to provide a permanent recreation building, and listed a number of various clubs in this age group that would like to have the meeting place. She filed a petition signed by about 150 senior citizens requesting this meeting place. The Mayor stated there was available the little building down by the Interregional Bridge, near the river. He suggested that a committee from this group meet with Mr. Sheffield, Recreation Director, and work something out with him; that a small amount of money could be spent to furnish the place comfortably. The group then met with Mr. Sheffield, and were to go down to this building the early part of next week to work out plans. CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS 404 406 Councilman Long offered the following resolution and moved its adoption: (RESOLUTION) WHEREAS, on June 12, 1958, there was presented to the Austin City Council a petition bearing the signatures of many hundreds of Austin citizens desiring to honor Ben White, one of their most patient and persevering servants who, in long labors of love for his fellow men, has generously shared his energies, his means, and his judgments in the continuous enhancement of his community; and, WHEREAS, the colleagues of the said Ben White, being likewise appreciative of their fellow member, were gratified to honor said petition by renaming a numbered street with the name of the said Ben White; and, WHEREAS, with the humbleness which characterizes true greatness which is mindful of others and regardless of self, the said Ben White became concerned lest some fellow man might, in some way, be inconvenienced by changing the identification of an address, and requested the City Council not to change the name of South First Street; and, WHEREAS, the City Council being appreciative of the feelings and judgment of the said Ben White has honored his request; but, WHEREAS, the City Council being also appreciative of the feelings of the host of citizens desiring to commemorate the name of their fellow citizen and public servant has cast about for some way (which the said Ben White can not find objectionable) in which to honor him, and has concluded that one certain project which has been near and dear to the hearts of all the members of the Council, including the said Ben White, has not been officially named, but has been identified by its location and use, to-wit: South Belt Loop; and, WHEREAS, the said Ben White can not object to the official naming of a heretofore unnamed future street, intended for the convenience and comfort of numberless people who will pass this way; Now, Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: That the identity of the project herefore commonly known as South Belt Loop be and the same is hereby officially named and designated in the City of Austin, and shall henceforth be known as "Ben White Boulevard". The motion was seconded by Councilman Pearson. By rising vote the Council adopted the Resolution, Councilman White present but not voting. The Mayor announced that the project heretofore commonly known as South Belt Loop is now officially designated as "BEN WHITE BOULEVARD". Councilman White expressed appreciation to the members of the Council and to the people who signed the other petitions. LOONEY, JR., asking that the sales of christmas trees, firecrackers, and other commodities from the lot at Windsor Road and Sharon Lane be discontinued. The petition was referred to the City Attorney to check ownership, zoning, etc. Councilman Pearson reported a complaint from Mr. Johnson about his next door neighbor's 150 chickens. Mr. Hargis made a report of the situation. The Mayor asked that recommendations be brought in on locations for two towers for the Ground Observation Corps. One location the Mayor suggested was by the Water Filtration Plant, and he asked that that be checked. The Council received notice from the City Manager that the following zoning applications had been referred to the Planning Commission and set for public hearing before the Council on July 24, 1958: H.
