Butler Tract Building OK'd with Utility Rules
- City leaders debated the ideal location for a new Chamber of Commerce building on the Butler Tract.
- City staff suggested moving the building for easier and cheaper utility access, but Chamber representatives argued against it due to the existing design tailored for the specific site, secured financing, and already-taken construction bids.
- The council informally approved the Chamber of Commerce's preferred building location and submitted plans.
- This approval came with conditions: water for air conditioning would come from a well, telephone and electric lines would be buried underground, and the Chambers of Commerce would pay for their own water and sewer line extensions.

Council Chamber, City Hall The meeting was called to order with Mayor Miller presiding. Roll call: Present: Councilmen Palmer, White, Mayor Miller Absent: Councilmen Long, Pearson Present also: W. T. Williams, Jr., City Manager; Doren R. Eskew, City Attorney Present from the Chambers of Commerce were MR. REX SHIELDS, MR. KENT RIDER, MR. LOUIS GOLDBERG, MR. VIC MATHIAS, and MR. MOTON CROCKETT, JR., and other members, and the Architect. The Mayor announced that this was a Special Meeting called for the purpose of discussing with the representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Junior Chamber of Commerce the location of the building on the Butler Tract. The City Manager displayed maps showing proposed development of the tract of the Auditorium, and suggested that the Chambers of Commerce might want to relocate the building where it would have access to Barton Springs Road, and where the utility extensions would not be so expensive. Members from the Chambers of Commerce stated the building had been designed for this particular, oddly shaped piece of ground; that the airconditioning had been planned for this location, and the building had been designed so that there would be a view of the City and of the Auditorium from both the Junior Chamber of Commerce quarters, and the Chamber of Commerce quarters. It was the request of the group that no delay be made in the construction, as bids had already been taken, and the financing had been arranged. If the building had to be redesigned, the bids might not be the same. It was stated that the delay in redesigning the building and taking new bids would be more costly than running the utility lines. The Council went over the plans for the building with the Architect. The Mayor suggested that Mr. Sutherland work with Mr. Jessen on the landscaping of the area. The Council informally approved the plans as submitted, and stated CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS 570 570 it would approve a resolution when submitted. It was understood that water would be taken from a well for airconditioning; that the telephone and electric lines would be constructed underground; and that the Chambers of Commerce would pay for the water and sewer line extensions. There being no further business, the Council adjourned at 4:45 Ρ.Μ., subject to the call of the Mayor. ATTEST: City Clerk APPROVED Jomnille Mayor
