Austin Rebuffs Governor on Capitol Zoning
- The Austin City Council voted to decline an immediate meeting with Governor Price Daniel.
- They cited the Governor's press statements, which they believed unfairly attempted to influence a specific zoning decision for property near the State Capitol on 12th Street.
- Expressing disappointment, the Council felt the Governor's public comments had prejudiced the issue, making a productive meeting impossible at that time.
- However, the Council affirmed its commitment to future cooperation and offered to meet with the Governor and the newly formed State Building Commission after January 15 to discuss mutual interests.

The City of Austin has always cooperated fully with the State of Texas with respect to all problems in which the City and State have a mutual interest. The present City Council of Austin has every intention of continuing that policy of full cooperation with the State. "However, in the statement which you have chosen to issue to the press, it now CITY OF AUSTIN. TEXAS- January 2, 1963 3 appears that the meeting is for the purpose of reviewing the zoning case of the property situated on the South side of 12th Street between Lavaca and Colorado. In rezoning this property, the City not only cooperated fully with the State of Texas, but also complied strictly with the provisions of the State zoning law which governs such matters. The State was notified well in advance of the public hearing held by the Planning Commission and also the public hearing held by the City Council. Therefore, we do not feel that any good purpose can be served by our meeting with you next Friday, January 4. However, please be assured that when the new State Building Commission is constituted on January 15, the City Council of Austin will welcome an opportunity to confer with the new Commission and you and all other interested citizens about any and all matters that are of mutual interest to the City of Austin and the State of Texas.
