=CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS • MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Special Meeting July 26, 1967 10:00 Α.Μ. Council Chamber, City Hall The meeting was called to order with Mayor Akin presiding. Roll call: Present: Absent: Councilmen Janes, LaRue, Long, Nichols, Mayor Akin None MAYOR AKIN announced this was a Special Called Meeting of the Austin City Council for the purpose of selecting a City Manager. He stated a great deal of thought and effort had gone into the undertaking of seeking a new City Manager, and the Council was confident it had done a good job. He expressed appreciation to the Press for their cooperation in not divulging the identity of the various fine candidates which had been interviewed. Councilman Nichols moved that MR. ROBERT M. TINSTMAN be hired as City Manager at a salary of $29,500 per year; and in addition, that the City pay his moving expenses from his present location to the City of Austin. The motion, seconded by Councilman Long, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Janes, LaRue, Long, Nichols, Mayor Akin Noes: None MAYOR AKIN introduced MR. ROBERT M. TINSTMAN, who had been selected unanimously as City Manager. MR. TINSTMAN expressed gratitude for the hospitality and warmth received during the last week or so from the Mayor, Council Mem- bers and other businessmen in the City. Austin has a fine reputation, and he is looking forward to moving here. He commended the Council in acting in the manner in which it had in interviewing so many individuals regarding this position of City Manager, and he expressed humility in being chosen. He expressed his awareness that the problems of city government were increasing and changing day by day, and the necessity of teamwork between the Mayor, Council, and City Manager. MR. TINSTMAN will assume office on September 1st. Councilman Long moved that the Council adjourn so that Mr. Tinstman could hold a press conference. CHARLES HILL was a classmate of his at Texas Technological College. He expressed highest regards for both of these gentlemen and complimented the Council on its selection.
