Councilmen Janes, LaRue, Nichols, Long, Mayor Akin Present: Absent: None The Invocation was delivered by Mr. Jim Oglesby, Associate Minister University Christian Church. TRAFFIC CONTROL IN RICHCREEK AND BURNET ROAD VICINITY The Council discussed the traffic control situation in the vicinity of Richcreek and Burnet Road. The City Manager noted that the installation of a traffic signal would merely move traffic more efficiently and safely, but would not necessarily decrease accidents. After some discussion, Councilman Long moved the Council approve the installation of a traffic light in the vicinity of Richcreek and Burnet Road. CONTINUED ANNEXATION HEARING Mayor Akin opened the public hearing continued from May 9, 1968 on the following annexation: 53.42 acres of land out of the Henry P. Hill League unplatted land and a portion of South Lamar Boulevard and Panther Trail. (Partially requested) After a lengthy discussion with proponents and opponents about the annexation of the above 53.42 acres of land, the Council decided to amend the ordinance to read 47.45 acres of land, excluding the remainder because the City could not provide utility services for a period of approximately three years. City Attorney Eskew pointed out that the Council could only pass the ordinance through two readings as it had been advertised, 53.42 acres, but that they could amend the ordinance and pass the amended ordinance through two readings if they readvertised the amended ordinance. They set May 29, 1968 as the date to schedule the admended ordinance on the agenda. FAIR HOUSING ORDINANCE Councilman Long addressed the Council personally concerning the opposition to the Fair Housing Ordinance, expressed mainly by Austin realtors. She reported that the Council had been threatened, insulted, and accused of not publicizing the Fair Housing Ordinance, and that they had not taken into consideration the interests of the realtors. Councilman Long pointed out that the Council was elected by the Citizens of Austin, and that the Council's action on the Fair Housing Ordinance had their best interests in mind. Councilman Nichols, in concurrence with Councilman Long, noted that the realtors, a minority, were attempting to arouse chaos among the citizens of Austin. He further stated that he had voted for the ordinance and would continue to support it. Councilman Long then moved the Council appropriate money out of the contingency funds to publish the Fair Housing Ordinance as it was passed by the Council.
