sCITY OF AUSTIN, TEXA1 MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Special Meeting May 15, 1975 7:30 P*-M. Electric Building Auditorium 301 West Avenue The meeting was called to order with Mayor Butler presiding. Roll Call: Present: Councilmen Binder, Friedman, Snell, Lebermann, Councilperson Dr. Linn, Mayor Butler, Mayor Pro Tern Dryden Absent: None The Invocation was delivered by RABBI LOUIS FIRESTEIN, Temple Beth Israel. Mayor Butler noted that this was a Special Called Meeting of the City Council for the purpose of administering the oath of office to the newly elected Council and for making presentations to the outgoing Council. He stated that the Master of Ceremonies would be Mr. Dan Davidson, City Manager. Mr. Davidson indicated that It was his distinguished opportunity and privilege on behalf of the incoming City Council and on behalf of the City of Austin to present plaques expressing appreciation to those members of the Council who will end their terms this evening. Mr. Davidson presented Mayor Butler with his plaque, at which time Mayor Butler expressed his appreciation for the privilege of having served as Mayor and for the trust placed in him by the citizens of Austin. He also expressed his gratitude to the City Manager and his staff. He wished the incoming Council every success and hoped all the citizens would join together and support the new Council. Mayor Pro Tern Dryden accepted his plaque and thanked everyone for having had the opportunity to serve and asked that the new Council continue to make Austin the greatest City in the country. He noted that he was looking forward to serving in the future in any capacity that was needed. =C1TY OP AUSTIN. TKXAfc Mav 15. 1975 Councilman Binder accepted his plaque and thanked those who had worked so long and hard for his efforts, and he expressed his appreciation to the City Staff and employees. He wished the best of luck to the new Council. Mr. Davidson noted that there were plaques for former Counoilmen Berl Handcox and Dan Love and that they would be provided to them. Mr. Davidson took this opportunity to state that it had been a great privilege having served under the outgoing Council and having provided a service for the City. He stated that it had been a very pleasant experience and was proud to have helped represent the Council throughout Austin. Mr. Davidson then introduced and presented certificates to each of the new Council members. Councilman Snell stated that he looked forward to two years of hard work, and he hoped to carry out some of the things he had talked about during his campaign. He dedicated himself to the citizens and asked for their cooperation. He introduced his family to the audience. Councilperson Dr. Linn thanked the people who supported her and worked for her, and she promised them progressive leadership for Austin. She noted that she would be honest, open, and frank and would listen to the people. She introduced some of her relatives. Councilman Lebermann looked forward to working with the incoming Council and introduced his family and some friends. Councilman Trevino took this opportunity to introduce his family and other relatives, and he recognized that he was the first Mexican-American in the history of Austin to serve on the Council. He asked all citizens to work with the Council, and he stated that they had not come to destroy but rather to build. He pledged communication and cooperation to the people. Councilwoman Himmelblau looked forward to working with the other members of the Council and anticipated that they would give their best on behalf of the City. She introduced her husband and friends. Councilmember Hofmann introduced her family and other relatives and friends. She pledged to those who had supported her and those who had not that she would do the very best she could. Mayor Friedman stated that this Council would be opening its doors, hearts, and minds to the needs of the citizens; and they would not be distracted. OATffiJOF OFFICE The Honorable Joe K. May 15. 1975 SELECTION OF MAYOR PRO TEM Councilman Lebermann moved that the Council select COUNCILMAN SNELL as the Mayor Pro Tern. The motion, seconded by Councilwoman Himmelblau, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Mayor Friedman, Councilmembers Hlmm&lblau, Hofmann, Lebermann, Linn, Snell, Trevino Noes: None Mayor Friedman took this opportunity to introduce his wife, mother and father, and other relatives and special friends. He also recognized the following: Mr. Duley Bell, President of Chamber of Commerce Mr. Dick Nichols, former Councilman State Representative and Mrs. Ronald Earle Travis County Commissioner Johnny Voudouris Travis County Commissioner Richard Moya Mrs. Fred Hofheinz (first lady of Houston) Senator and Mrs. Lloyd Doggett City Manager Davidson thanked the Porter Junior High School Band and the Professors of Dixieland.
