  • Voters approved $215.85 million in revenue bonds to continue the city's 16% participation in the South Texas Project (nuclear power).
  • Proposals to sell off the city's nuclear power interest were rejected, as were significant bond issues ($433.9 million) for new coal or lignite-fired power plants.

CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS Special Called Council Meeting April 09, 1979 10:00 Α.Μ. Council Chambers 301 West Second Street The meeting was called to order with Mayor McClellan presiding. Roll Call: Present: Councilmembers Cooke, Mullen, Snell, Mayor McClellan, Mayor Pro Tem Goodman Absent: Councilmembers Himmelblau, Trevino The Mayor stated that this was a Special Called Meeting for the purpose of canvassing results of the General Municipal Election held on April 7, 1979. The following precincts were then reviewed: Mayor McClellan Precinct 137 Okay Councilmember Cooke Precinct 132 Okay Precinct 133 Okay Councilmember Mullen Precinct 134 - Okay Mayor McClellan Precinct 138 Okay Councilmember Snell Precinct 255 Okay Mayor McClellan Precinct 139 Okay Councilmember Cooke Precinct 136 Okay Councilmember Mullen Precinct 135 It was noted there was a discrepancy of one ballot. Grace, your department, the City Clerk's office; Hugh, the Data Systems; and Glenn, the Public Information Office; and Pete Sybesma...you all did an outstanding job and it ran very smoothly." Councilmember Mullen said, "That's true Mayor. So often in an election it seems like something always bogs down and we appreciate all of you." Councilmember Cooke Precinct 236 Okay Mayor McClellan told Council they had three resolutions to approve. Motion Councilmember Cooke moved that the Council adopt a resolution verifying the results of returns for Proposition 2 and Proposition 4 of the Bond Election held on April 7, 1979: The motion, seconded by Councilmember Mullen, carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmembers Mullen, Snell, Mayor McClellan, Councilmember Cooke, Mayor Pro Tem Goodman Noes: None Absent: Councilmembers Himmelblau, Trevino PROPOSITION NUMBER 2 "SHALL THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS, BE AUTHORIZED TO SELL ALL OF AUSTIN'S SIXTEEN PERCENT (16%) INTEREST IN THE SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT (NUCLEAR)?"
