AUDITORIUM SHORES - SWEARING IN OF NEW COUNCIL Council Chambers, 301 West Second Street, Austin, Texas Memorandum To: City Council Carole Keeton McClellan Mayor John Treviño, Jr. Mayor Pro Tem Council Members Larry Deuser Roger Duncan Richard Goodman Ron Mullen Charles E. Urdy Nicholas M. Meiszer City Manager Grace Monroe City Clerk Mayor Pro Tem Trevino called to order the meeting of the Council scheduled for 7:30p.m. for the purpose of installing the new Council in office. WELCOME The Honorable Ann Richards, State Treasurer, spoke words of welcome to members of the Council and members of the audience. INVOCATION The Invocation was given by Phil Ware, Minister, Church of Christ in Westover Hills. PRESENTATION OF THE COLORS Presentation of the Colors as done by Girl Scouts of America, Boy Scouts of America and Camp Fire. : PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE & NATIONAL ANTHEM Gustavo Garcia led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. The LBJ High School Band played the National Anthem. AWARDS FOR OUTGOING COUNCILMEMBERS Mayor Pro Tem Trevino presented Awards of Appreciation to Councilmembers Larry Deuser and Richard Goodman, who will no longer serve on the City Council. Both Councilmembers expressed their thanks for the awards and said they give the new Mayor and new Council their full support. { Council Memo : 2 May 15, 1983 Mayor Pro Tem Trevino presented the Certificate of Office for the 1983-85 Council to Councilmembers Duncan and Urdy; and Councilmember Mullen, who was elected Mayor Of Austin in the April 30, 1983 Run Off Election. Councilmembers Duncan and Urdy spoke about their goals for the next two years. Mayor Mullen told the audience he has a commitment to the people to keep Austin a great place to live. He said Austin needs leaders who will not be afraid to make difficult decisions and Mayor Mullen promised to try to bring diverse views together. Mayor Mullen then took over the meeting and presented to Councilmember Trevino an Award of Appreciation for being the Mayor of the City of Austin since the end of February, 1983. Mayor Mullen also presented Councilmember Trevino with a Certificate of Office. Councilmember Trevino told the audience the highest honor you can give any citizen is to elect him to an office of trust. He pointed out the new Council has many serious challenges before them and that he will work hard and needs the support of the people. He thanked the people of Austin for giving him the opportunity of serving as interim Mayor and said he will serve the new Mayor and Councilmembers with loyalty. Mayor Mullen next presented the Certificates of Office to Mark Rose, Sally Shipman and Mark Spaeth who are all new members of the Austin City Council. OATH OF OFFICE The Honorable Jack Pope, Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court, gave the Oath of Office to Mayor Mullen and Councilmembers Rose, Duncan, Shipman, Spaeth, Trevino and Urdy. ELECTION OF MAYOR PRO TEM Motion The Council, on Councilmember Urdy's motion, Councilmember Duncan's second, appointed Councilmember Trevino as Mayor Pro Tem to serve for the 1983-85 term of office. (0-0 Vote) GUESTS INTRODUCED - CLOSING REMARKS Mayor Mullen introduced special guests in the audience and The Honorable Ann Richards made closing remarks. BENEDICTION E.M. Franklin, Pastor, St. James Baptist Church, gave the benediction. ADJOURNMENT Council adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
