! 3 TY OF AUSTIN FOUNDED 1839 Austin City Council MINUTES For SPECIAL CALLED MEETING Council Chambers, 307 West Second Street, Austin, Texas Memorandum To: June 30, 1987 - 4:30 Ρ.Μ. Mayor Cooksey called to order the meeting of the Council, noting the absence of Councilmember Humphrey. The Mayor announced the purpose of the meeting was to hold a public hearing on single member districts. Motion The Council, on Councilmember Urdy's motion, Mayor Pro Tem Trevino's second, passed the following motion: (6-0 Vote, Councilmember Humphrey absent) Create a subcommittee composed of Mayor Pro Tem Trevino, Councilmembers Urdy and Nofziger to work with our attorneys and the plaintiffs and their attorneys in order to: (1) Arrive at agreed stipulation of fact (2) Address questions and issues concerning settlement of the case (3) Advise the remaining Councilmembers of recommendations for action and obtain action upon such recommendation The following people spoke at the public hearing: Enrique Lopez, Shudde Fath, Stacy Suits, Steve Spear, Susan Frost, Harry W. Nolen (against change), Terrell Blodgett (who said Council has no authority to bypass the Charter, which can only be changed by court order), Dorothy Turner (speaking against single member districts because voters said no), Marcos DeLeon, David Talbot, Eros Mondrotti, Velma Overton, Gary Bledsoe, Paul Hernandez, James Pinedo, Sam Briscoe, David Frederick, Bruce Wilson, David Juarino, Sam Griswold, Diana Casteneda, Ron Davis, Paul Robbins, Pat Eakin, Mark Rose (talked about the need for a fair map to be drawn for the public process), David Bentliff, Tim Walton, |- Council Memo 2 6/30/87 Rick Levy, Willie Lewis, T.L.
