FOUNDED 1820 Austin City Council MINUTES For - SPECIAL CALLED MEETING June 15, 1988 - 6:00 Ρ.Μ. SWEARING IN CEREMONIES FOR NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS Council Chambers, 307 West Second Street, Austin, Texas Memorandum To: OF THE CITY COUNCIL A special called meeting of the Council was held for the swearing in ceremony of newly elected members of the City Council. Cactus Pryor welcomed the audience to the ceremony and made opening remarks. Mons. Lonnie Reyes, St. Julia Catholic Church, gave the invocation. Mr. Pryor presented out-going Mayor Frank C. Cooksey with a plaque "In honor of his three years of service as Mayor of the City of Austin, on behalf of the elected Council and the citizens of Austin." Mayor Cooksey accepted the plaque. Out-going Mayor Pro Tem Trevino also presented a plaque to Mayor Cooksey. MEETING CALLED TO ORDER Mayor Cooksey called to order the meeting of the Council, noting the presence of all Councilmembers, as well as newly elected Mayor Lee Cooke and newly elected Councilmember Robert Barnstone, as well as Councilmembers Smoot Carl-Mitchell and Charles Urdy, who were re-elected to office. Mayor Cooksy made several remarks and recognized special guests in the Council Chamber. Mayor Cooksey then presented a plaque to Mayor Pro Tem Trevino and left the dais to take his seat in the audience. Councilmember Urdy presented a plaque to Mayor Pro Tem Trevino, who made his acceptance speech and left the dais to take his seat in the audience. OATH OF OFFICE Mr. Pryor announced Chief Justice Tom Phillips, Texas Supreme Court, would administer the Oath of Office. Judge Phillips administered the oath of office to Mayor Cooke, Councilmembers Urdy, Carl-Mitchell and Barnstone. Mayor Cooke spoke and introduced Councilmember Carl-Mitchell. ) : ! 1 i Council Memo 2 6/15/88 After Councilmember Carl-Mitchell spoke, Mayor Cooke introduced Councilmember Barnstone who spoke to the audience. The next speaker introduced by Mayor Cooke was Councilmember Urdy. ELECTION OF MAYOR PRO TEM Mayor Cooke announced, "As my first official act as Mayor of the City of Austin, I open the floor to nominations for Mayor Pro Tem." Motion The Council, on Councilmember Humphrey's motion, Councilmember Carl-Mitchell's second, approved the appointment of Sally Shipman as Mayor Pro Tem. (5-2 Vote, Councilmembers Barnstone and Urdy voted No.) ADJOURNMENT The meeting of the Council was adjourned at 7:00 Ρ.Μ.
