OFAUST FOUNDED 1889 Austin City Council MINUTES For SPECIAL CALLED MEETING - June 15, 1990 - 6:00 P. M. AUSTIN AREA GARDEN CENTER, 2220 BARTON SPRINGS ROAD Council Chambers, 307 West Second Street, Austin, Texas Mayor Cooke called to order the special called meeting of the Council, noting the absence of Mayor Pro Tem Shipman, Councilmembers Carl-Mitchell and Humphrey. Mayor Cooke announced the purpose of the meeting was the new City Council inauguration, held at the Austin Area Garden Center, 2220 Barton Springs Road, from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Mayor Cooke introduced Dr. Ralph Smith, Pastor, Hyde Park Baptist Church, who gave the invocation. Welcoming and opening remarks were presented by Mayor Cooke. The Mayor then introduced The Honorable Tom Phillips, Chief Justice, Texas Supreme Court. Judge Phillips conducted the swearing-in of Councilmembers-Elect Nofziger, Epstein and Larson. Mayor Cooke next called for the election of Mayor Pro Tem by members of the Council, Robert Barnstone, Smoot Carl-Mitchell, Louise Epstein, Bob Larson, Michael "Max" Nofziger, and Charles Urdy. Motion The Council, on Councilmember Barnstone's motion, Councilmember Epstein's second, elected Dr. Charles Urdy as Mayor Pro Tem. (6-0 Vote, Councilmember Carl-Mitchell absent) Mayor Cooke introduced Councilmembers Nofziger, Epstein and Larson to the audience, who made remarks concerning their goals as members of the Austin City Council. Mayor Cooke made closing remarks and then introduced Rabbi Louis Firestein, Rabbi Emeritus, Temple Beth Israel, who gave the benediction. Council adjourned its special called meeting.
